WHMIS and Safety Assignment
WHMIS and Safety Assignment
2. WHMIS is an information system formed in 1988 that is designed to assist and educate
students about safety and health hazards of materials that they use in the workplace.
3. The information I would find on a WHMIS label is:
- The name of the chemical
- The WHMIS hazard symbols
- Risks and precautions
- First aid instructions
- The supplier’s name and address
- A reference to the matching MSDS stating that more information is available
4. Not all products and chemicals have WHMIS labels. This is because the WHMIS legislation
does not control all the products, so they may not have WHMIS labels or use the same exact
symbols as WHMIS. Products such as pesticides, some consumer and household producers,
cosmetics such as hairsprays, and more, use the international hazard symbols.
5. An MSDS (material safety data sheet) is a sheet that gives more detailed technical information
about the product. It is broken up into nine sections:
- Product information
- Hazardous ingredients in the product
- Physical data
- Fire and explosive hazard
- Reactivity data
- Toxicological properties
- Preventive measures to be taken
- First aid measures to be taken if exposed
- When it was made and for more information on who to contact for more information
6.
The first one is a danger poison symbol, the second one is a caution flammable symbol, the third
one is a warning explosive symbol, and the last one is a danger corrosive symbol.
7.
Identify Symbol (WHMIS One hazard Example
Symbols)
A Class A: Compressed gas - Heat may cause - Steel
containers to explode cylinders of
- Keep away from heat nitrogen
or potential sources
of ignition
B Class B: Flammable and - Potential fire hazard - Propane
combustible materials and sparks, flame, or
friction could ignite it
- Keep any of these
materials away from
heat sources and
other combustible
materials
C Class C: Oxidizing materials - The material is a fire - Sulfuric acid
or explosion risk near
flammable or
combustible material
- May burn skin/eyes
on contact
- - Keep the material
away from
combustible materials
and store in
designated areas
D Class D (poisonous and - The material is a - Cyanide
infectious material), division potentially fatal
1: Materials causing poisonous substance
immediate and serious toxic - May be fatal or cause
effects permanent damage if
it is inhaled,
swallowed, or
absorbed through
skin
- May burn skin or
eyes on contact
- Avoid inhaling by
working in well-
ventilated areas
E Class D, division 2 - Materials that can - Asbestos
(poisonous and infectious cause ill health
material): Materials causing effects such as
other toxic effects allergies, asthma,
cancer, and more
- Avoid skin and eye
contact by wearing
all protective
equipment
F Class D, division 3 - Organisms and toxins - Anthrax
(poisonous and infectious that are believed to
material): Biohazardous cause disease
infectious material
G Class E: Corrosive material - Caustic or acid - Chromatic
materials that can eat acid
through the skin or
corrode metals
