Communication Studies 2015 May Paper 2
Type: Paper 2
Year: 2015
Module 1:
The extract is about a once promising film industry of the Caribbean failing but now have the
possibility of being saved by new promising filmmaker graduates from the University of the West Indies.
The writer’s main purpose is to inform the reader of the resurgence of Caribbean cinema from its
declining popularity due to the advent of new filmmakers graduating from a prestigious Caribbean
University, University of the West Indies. To effectively achieve the purpose, the writer used three
organisational strategies: Compare and contrast, authoritative reference, and historical data. The
writer also employed language techniques: use of metaphors, and?
One of the organisational strategies used was compare and contrast. The writer effectively used
this strategy to make comparisons of Caribbean films to Hollywood films. This can be observed in lines
2-5, where promising Caribbean films were listed and were compared to blockbuster Hollywood movies
in lines 10-12. This strategy effectively achieves the purpose by showing how great the Western movies
were compared to the Caribbean ones. Another strategy employed was the use of authoritative
reference. This is the use of reputed persons or organisations to cite and gain information. In this case
Bruce Paddington, a co-ordinator of the film programme at the University of the West Indies was
referenced in lines 23-26. This gave the writer a strong backing to his information. The last strategy
used was historical data. Listing of the blockbuster Hollywood movies from the past in lines 10-12 and
promising Caribbean films in lines 2-5was use of historical data to show how promising the industry
was and it gives validity to the writer’s purpose.
The first language technique used was metaphors. Metaphors compare two unlikely objects and
finds a common similarity between them. This was seen in the line ‘we are having a renaissance in
filmmaking’. This effectively achieves the idea of resurgence within the writer’s purpose.
The validity of the information presented was evaluated by using two sources: the reference from
Bruce Paddington. The Bruce Paddington source in lines 23-36 was referenced. He is a coordinator of
the film programme at the University of the West Indies. He gave information on the likely source of the
resurgence. This source is valid since he is affiliated with the Caribbean’s Top University, University of
the West Indies.
In conclusion, to effectively convey the writer’s message, the writer employed the use of
historical data, authoritative reference, use of metaphors and compare and contrast. The Bruce
Paddington source ensured the validity of the piece.
(NB: Creole is stereotypically criticised as being a language used by the poor and less educated) Ref: p.
144.
People who speak Standard English, stereotypically white people, usually feel annoyed when creole is
used to speak about religion or dictate their doctrines.
The reason why someone who uses Standard English might not understand another speaking creole is
because rues of Standard English does not apply to the creole version.

the school such as: having a more productive school population and an illness and deficient-free
population. The three strategies to be used would be ethos, pathos and logos.
The theme of the proposal would be A Healthy Lifestyle in School. This theme will clearly illustrate
what the center focus of the proposal would be and the goals the prefect body is aiming to accomplish
by implementing it. The events will be timetabled in such a way to prevent interruption of classes, yet
gain the maximum benefit of this system. Every day, the recess periods would have about fifteen minutes
of warm up exercises and 30 minutes of lunch or break consisting of a balanced diet prepared for the
school and monitored and controlled by a dietitian. Every Fridays, the last two hours will be dedicated
to yoga training or some may prefer the gym training, where they will be trained by experts in the field,
namely, hired yoga instructors and gym trainers respectively.
This would bring about several benefits such as: having a more productive school population and an
illness and deficient-free population. If the students are healthy they will perform better and would have
an increase in cognitive actions. They will also be fit to prevent abstention used to being sick.
The three strategies used to promote this campaign would be the use of ethos, pathos and logos. Ethos
Seeks to appeal to credibility of character by convincing the individuals using well-known
personnel. This can be done by having online interviews with well-known dietitians, bodybuilders and
doctors to promote the campaign credibility. Pathos seeks to appeal to emotion of an individual by
evoking an emotional response, be it a positive or negative one. This can be done by having persons
who are suffering negatively from poor health lifestyle talk to the students and those who have changed
and become better can also give a lecture. Logos seeks to appeal to logic and reason by use of statistics
and evidence to give full information or facts. A doctor can give a lecture on benefits of having a
healthy lifestyle and graphs and images can be shown to the students showing proof of the effects of a
healthy lifestyle.
In conclusion, having a healthy lifestyle can bring about an array of benefits to the individuals and the
school. Utilizing the system proposed will enable these benefits to be derived
