during medieval times for armor. Arnis is also known as Eskrima, Kali and Garrote, and other names in

 BRIEF HISTORY OF MODERN ARNIS:

Arnis have long been an integral part of Filipino fighting style. This can be trace way back when the
Spanish had first invaded the Philippines. The Traditional Arnis, which the spaniards dubbed as “escrima” is
meant to inflict fatal damage. It incorporated 3 methods: espada y daga (sword and dagger) - employs a
long blade and a short dagger; solo baston (single stick); and sinawali (to weave) - uses two sticks of equal
length, twirled in "weaving" fashion for blocking and striking (the term derives from sinawali, the bamboo
matting woven in the Philippines). Although Filipino warriors uses various weaponry, the Traditional Arnis’
main focus is the compatibility of the complete system of bodywork. The successful technique mainly
focused on the harmony of footwork with using the hands as the main weapon of attack. As Spanish
eventually conquered the Philippines, It was subsequently outlawed. Fortunately, filipinos were able to
preserved this fighting style in the form of dance or mock battles staged in religious plays known as moro-
moro.

Throughout the century, this fighting style have constantly evolving and been modified in various
ways, which then leads to the Arnis that we all know today. Remy Amador Presas is the founder of Modern
Arnis. He modified some certain aspects of Traditional Arnis and various island style, then, emerge it with
other techniques from different martial arts, such as Karate, Judo and Kenpo. Modern Arnis is being utilize
