Earliest Buddhist Monuments in India
Buddhism originated in India ,and between 5 th and 12th centuries BCE it
was a belief system practiced in Asia. The beginning of the Buddhist
architecture of India is still wrapped in mist but for a few glimpses in early
literature. Before the birth of Buddha(563-483 BC),the practice of rising stupa in
some form have been vogue, for burial mound is mentioned even in the Vedic
literature. The Satapatha,Brahmana distinguishes two types of burial mounds
,rectangular and circular. Also the Jatakas refer to the building of stupas on the
remains of deceased persons and probably these were earthen mounds.

Sanchi Stupa

A stupa is a dome-shaped shrine unique to Buddhism.Stupas are places

of worship for Buddhists and house relics and other Buddhists artifacts. They are
structures devoted to enlightenment. The Sanchi stupa is located in the state of
Madhya Pradesh in central India and was built around 283 BCE .It is the second
largest stupa in India and is comprised of four carved gateways facing outward
in the four different directions. The lotus design used is meant to be a symbol for
mankind's shedding of the need for material wants.Sanchi also is a place where
architectural digs happen, mainly in connection with the history of Buddhism.

Maha Bodi Temple

Located in the town of Bodhgaya in the state of Bihar, this temple lies 105
kilometers from the state capaital,Patna.Bodhgaya is a center for Buddhist
worship and learning. The temple dates back to the third century BCE and
features a glided image of the Buddha that is a must see for tourists. The temple
commemorates the bhodi tree under which Buddha first received
enlightenment. The dome of the structure is 52 meters tall.

In Indian epigraphs the term chaitya has sometimes been used as a

symnonym of a stupa. The use of the term in the sense of the stupa attained
considerable popularity at Amaravati,Nagarjunakonda and in western India. The
word chaitya (or) cheitya occurs twice in the inscription of Bharhut, but it is
doubtful whether it was used in the sense of a stupa.
Also there is archaeological evidence to show that Bahuputta chaitya and
Chapala chaitya are depicted in one of the reliefs carved on amutilated pillar at
the Ammaravati.

A perusal of Buddhist records may show that the term chaitya in the
sense of a stupa had been used Largely in the upper and the Lower Decan. At the
same time ,it may be pointed out that a stupa with a railing,as one sees at
Bharhut,Sanchi,Bodh-Gaya and Ammaravati, does not differ much from the
basic conception of Vriksha-chaitya.

All this suggests that an amalgam of chaitya concept ,in some way (or)
the other, with the original idea of stupa.Should this latter surmise prove to be
nearer facts, one may as well disentangle two threads of idea s interlaced in the
architectural design of railed stupa, the idea of memorial and primitive concept
of chaitya worship.
