Experiment No# 6

Deionization and softening of water using ion exchange chromatography.

Requirements
1. Distilled water, acidic cation-exchange resin (Amberlite IR-120), basic
anionexchange resin
2. 25 mL graduated cylinder, 2 chromatographic columns, 125ml flask and pipette

Procedure
1. Weigh out 0.1000-0.1500 g of any salt and dissolve it in 10 mL of DI water to
make hard water.

2. Using your 25 mL graduated cylinder, measure 15 cm3 of dry Amberlite IR-

120 (+) a strongly acidic cation-exchange resin in the H+ form. Take the similar
amount of a

strongly basic anion-exchange resin in the OH- form.

3. With the stopcock closed, insert a piece of glass wool into the bottom of two
columns and cover it with water. Be certain that there are no air bubbles. Air bubbles
can be removed by slightly tapping the side of the column.

4. Add water separately to the dry resins present in graduated cylinders until the
resins are completely covered. Pour the strongly acidic cation-exchange resin in
column A and strongly basic Anion-exchange resin with water into column B
separately

5. Once the columns have been prepared, add enough water to the columns so
that the water level rises approximately one inch above the level of the resin.

6. Then add your hard water to the top of the column A and begin to collect the
solution from the bottom of the column with a clean 125 mL flask.

7. Continue to add water drop wise to the column while allowing the elutant to
collect in the 125 mL flask. When elutant have been collected, check the pH of an
elutant drop from the column using pH paper.

8. Add the water obtained from column A to the top of column B and collect the
deionized and soften water in 125ml flask.

Assessment
1. What are the common ion exchange system problems?

2. Which Contaminants are removed by the water softening (ion exchange) process?

3. What is the Principle of ion exchange chromatography?
