‘Parting is such sweet sorrow’

Enter ROMEO, comes into the restaurant

ROMEO But, soft! what light through yonder window breaks?

It is the east, and Juliet is the sun.
Arise, fair sun, and kill the envious moon,
Who is already sick and pale with grief,
That you have maid art far fairer than she:
It is my lady, O, it is my love!
O, that she knew she was!
See, how she leans her cheek upon her hand!
O, that I was a glove upon that hand,
That I might touch that cheek!

Enter Juliet sitting in a booth at the restaurant

JULIET Ay me!

ROMEO She speaks:

O, speak again, bright angel!

JULIET O Romeo, Romeo! wherefore art thou Romeo?

Deny my father and refuse my name;
Or, if you will not, be but sworn my love,
And I'll no longer be a Capulet.

ROMEO [Aside] Should I hear more, or shall I speak at this?

JULIET It is my name that is my own enemy

You are yourself not a Montague! I wish you had another name!
What's in a name?
If I were to call you any other name, you would still be the same;

ROMEO I take you at my word:

Call me but love, and I'll be newly born;
Henceforth I never will be Romeo.

JULIET
Who has come to my house so late in the night?

ROMEO By a name
I do not know how to tell you who I am:
My name, dear saint, is hateful to me,
Because it is an enemy to you;
If I Had written the word, I would tear it.

JULIET Are you not Romeo and a Montague?

If they do see you, they will murder you.

ROMEO And but thou love me, let them find me here:
My life was better ended by their hate,
Then death prolonged, wanting of my love.

JULIET Do you love me? I know you will say 'Ay,'

And I will take my word: yet if you swear it,
You may prove false; O gentle Romeo,
If you do love me, say it so loudly so the people in the back can hear;

ROMEO Juliet, by the moon in the night sky I swear--

JULIET Do not swear by the moon, the inconstant moon,

That monthly changes in her circled orb,
Lest that my love prove likewise variable.

ROMEO What shall I swear by?

JULIET Well, do not swear: although I joy in you,

I have no joy of this contract tonight:
It is too rash, too unadvised, too sudden;
This bud of love, by summer's ripening breath,
May prove a beauteous flower when next we meet.
Good night, good night!

ROMEO O, how will you leave me so unsatisfied?

JULIET What satisfaction can you have tonight?

ROMEO Saying that we both love each other.

JULIET I said that even before you wanted me to say it.

Nurse comes into the restaurant and calls for Juliet

JULIET I hear some noise within;

NURSE dear love, Juliet!

JULIET Coming, good nurse! Sweet Montague, be true.
Stay a bit longer, I will be back soon.

Exit to nurse outside

ROMEO O blessed, blessed night! I am afraid.

Being in night, all this is but a dream,
Too flattering-sweet to be substantial.

Re-enter JULIET, to restaurant chair

JULIET Three words, dear Romeo, and good night indeed.

If your love is true then we shall get married tomorrow.
I will sacrifice my wealth and then
follow you as we go out into the world

NURSE [Within] Madam!

JULIET I’ll come immediately -- I will see you tomorrow.

ROMEO So thrive my soul--

JULIET A thousand times good night

ROMEO A thousand times good night.

JULIET Good night, good night! parting is such sweet sorrow,

That I shall say good night till it is tomorrow.

Exit, above
