IBM’S Code of conduct analysis

In general, an employee’s code of conduct is a legal document structured by an

organization in the effort to give guidelines to their employees on behavioral traits that are

acceptable within their premises. It helps in structuring the acceptable behaviors of the employee

on a day to day basis with accordance to the social norms. The code of conduct is designed to

match the overall organization’s culture and should conform to its vision, mission and core

values. Mostly, new joiners in an organizationare compelled to accept the code of conduct after

recruitment by appending their signature to ascertain their acknowledgement and consent of the

document.

IBM is an international company which offers jobs to thousands of employees across the

globe. They have one code of conductdocument that makes their employees all over their outlets

conform to their specific behavioral expectations. Thiscompany’s code of conduct document is

drafted to address issues such as conflict of interest, employee attendance, employee interoffice

relationships, dress codes and use of social media. It also warns the stakeholders against

violating the set rules and in an eventuality of breaking them, the consequences that follow.

Every new employee in this organization is required to read and comprehend the code of

conduct document, upon which will append their signature at the bottom of the template.

Majority of the employees are compelled to adhere to the rules and regulations drafted in the

code of conduct document.Nevertheless, signingthe code means that the employee has read and

understood the document and the implications accompanied by violation of any rule written

down in the document. Although, there maybe a few bad apples as always who, ignore and even

don’t read and comprehend the document by before accepting it by signing, we say ignorance

has no defense therefore they will be held accountable for any consequences associated.

In the employee relationships code of ethics in this company, the company does not

prohibit co-worker relationship and marriage but only for people who are at the same

ranking/level. Interoffice relationships where employees of different ranks are involved is highly

prohibited due to compromise on professionalism. This is viable and valid concern and the

organization’s effort to maintain theirintegrity within their work force is commendable. Another

example of a mandatethat is used to draft the code is prohibition of using social media platforms

during working hours. This rule helps in exempting workers from activities that might deter them

from utilizing the available working hours leading to low productivity rates. (Tourani et al.,

2017)

Employees within the organization should profess several values of conduct such as

integrity, exercise professional competence, show objectivity, be confident and be ethically

behaved. These core values will enable interaction within the organization easier and frictionless.

An employee’s society which respect and adhere with the societal social norms will always be

easy to manage and productivity rates will also be high. IBM's employee code of conduct is as an

ethical document since it deals with the ethics of their stakeholders and their behavioral conduct

within the organizations. It is also a legalcontract between the employer and the workers since it’s

one of the company’s expectations from their employees and it’s an important document in their

employee’s handbook (Dodgson et al., 2013)
