What is research?
Bennet (1991):

‘.. a systematic, careful inquiry or

examination to discover new information or
relationships and to expand/verify existing
knowledge for some specified purpose’.

8
Three types of research
 Descriptive research - finding out,
describing what is.

 Explanatory research - explaining how or

why things are as they are (and using this to
predict).

 Evaluation research - evaluation of

policies, strategies, programs and practices.
9
Research contexts
 Academics: the importance of the peer review
process
 Students: projects and honours, masters & PhD
theses
 Government and business organisations: immediate
policy relevance
 Consultants: serving government/ organisations
 Managers: dependent on high quality information

I. The Research Process

15
Why publish in top
journals/conferences
• Contribute new body of knowledge
• Popular in particular areas
• General impact (H index)
• Get promotion in the University
(Tsui, 2008)

Challenges and Concerns
• Limited chances to publish in top journals
– Very limited spaces (i.e only two issues per volume);
– Very high rejection rate (i.e 95% rejection rate);
– Many excellent researchers are competing.
• Long process (2.5-5.5 years to get an article accepted)
– Stage 1: Complete a research project (1-3 years)
– Stage 2: Go through the whole process (1.5-2.5 years)
– Stage 3: Formal publication (about 1 year)
• Very picky and demanding reviewers
• Researchers’ constraints: limited time, resources, knowledge & skills
• We need some strategies and tactics for publishing, which are also
helpful for conducting high quality research.

Marketing, ANU
What strategies ? (1)
– Understand the “needs” of the leading journals; understand who the
audiences are;
– What reviewers/editors like?
• Strong literature review;
• Strong background/rationale of the study;
• Solid research design/methods
• High quality data/strong result
• Strong theoretical contribution
• Strong practical contribution
• Creative/interesting research idea
• Advanced data analysis approach
• Good presentation skill (logical, clear and concise)

What strategies ? (2)
• The Major Reasons that Papers Got Rejected in top Journals
– The research questions asked were neither interesting nor important.
– Hypothesis without theory or insufficient theoretical justification for
hypothesis.
– Design flaw (Methods can not answer your research questions/research
problems).
– Weak empirical contribution (e.g., data with poor quality).
• Know the specific requirements of your target journal

Marketing, ANU
Specific suggestions
• Don’t make too many unpublished references
• Cite all new publications on that area
• Cite the papers published in the journal you targeted
• Don’t be overly critical of past research
• Presentation:
– Title of paper must be provocative (if you can)
– Abstract must contain theoretical and practical contributions
– Introduction – strong positioning of contribution (but don’t overstate
your contribution)
• Now that I have written it …
– Edit, edit and edit! Sloppy writing signals sloppy research to reviewers.
– “The best writers labour over each sentence”

Publications

• From Undergraduate, Masters’ thesis or Doctorate

students’ thesis – opportunity to convert to
journal/conference papers. Target to peer/reviewed
international conference/journal papers
– Research proposal – able to publish in peer reviewed
international conference/journal (must be innovative
research, strong method and good contribution to body
of knowledge)
– Thesis – able to publish in peer reviewed international
conference/journal (perhaps two or three papers). It is
good idea to focus scopus or Scimago journal
publications (at least Q3)
Several tips

• Check and consider which target journal – read the aims

and scope of journals etc
• Follow author guidelines;
• Check all references and formatting; text references,
grammatical and spelling;
• Contact or email editor very short / brief abstract (to see
whether they accept our paper);
• Introduction;
• Literature review (if needed);
• Methods;
• Results and Discussion;
• Conclusion;
• Acknowledgement;
• Contribution to practitioners;
• Contribution to the body of knowledge
PhD scholarship opportunities

• Australia Government – Masters/PhD scholarship

opportunities:
– Australian Awards – AUSAID (full tuition fee and living
allowances)
– Endeavour Awards (3-4 years program for PhD and 2
years program for Master by research) (full tuition fee
and living allowances)
– International Postgraduate Research Scholarship (IPRS)
to cover only tuition fee, but usually for living allowances
covered by universities (teaching assistant or
tutoring/marking tasks)
• Perhaps from Indonesia Government (seeking opportunities
for scholarship);
• From Asian Development Bank scholarship;
• From Fullbright Scholarship (American Universities –
including Postdoc or research fellowship);
• Thank you very much indeed for listening
• Any questions
