1. Consider a 15 stage column with the overheated condenser as stage 1, the feed tray as stage 6 and
the reboiler as stage 16. The following inputs and parameters apply. The relative volatility of 1.5,
Feed flowrate 1 mol/min, mole fraction of the light component in the feed (z f) is 0.5, R is 2.706
mol/min, D is 0.5 mol/min, q is 1 (saturated feed), overhead receiver molar hold up 5 mol, the
feed molar hold up 0.5 mol and bottom(reboiler) molar hold up 5 mol. The operating temperature
and pressure of the column is 180 F and 1 bar respectively. Determine the steady state
composition of the light component at each stage.

2. A mixture of gas containing acetone, nitrogen and oxygen at a composition of 3.53Ibmol/h,

136.55 Ibmol/h and 36.4 Ibmol/hr enters the bottom of the absorption column. A 176.4 Ibmol/hr
of water if fed at the top of the column to absorb the acetone in the gas mixture. Both feeds enter
the column at 80 F of temperature and 14.7 psia of pressure. The column also operates at the
same temperature and pressure. Determine the amount acetone that is absorbed into the water?

3. Consider the ethyl acetate process. Ethanol reacts with acetic acid in the liquid phase to form
ethyl acetate and water through the reaction:
CH3 COOH + CH3CH2OH  CH3 COO C2 H5 + H2O
Model a CSTR reactor if the temperature in the reactor is 50 ◦C, and pressure is 101 kPa. Both
ethanol and acetic acid streams each have the molar flow of 50 kmol⋅h−1, temperature of 20 ◦C,
and pressure of 110 kPa. The volume of the reactor is 3 m3. Calculate
a) composition of the product stream if the rate of the reaction is given by
= k (CACB – CRCS/Ke )
where
k = 1.206 × 106e−E∕RT
E = 54,240 kJ⋅kmol−1 and Ke = 4.5 is the equilibrium constant based on molarity.
b) find the dependence of ethanol conversion on the reactor volume in the reactor volume range
from 0.5 to 6 m3
