WHAT IS A MAJOR
SCALE?
A major scale is a series of 7 different pitches with an additional 8th pitch
an octave above the first note in the series.

G A B C D E F# & G
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
HOW TO CREATE A
MAJOR SCALE
The major scale is constructed using a pattern of whole and half steps.
Whole Steps = W
Half Steps = h

The Major Scale pattern is as follows: W W h W W W h

LET’S BUILD THE C
MAJOR SCALE
-
Step 1: The C Major Scale means we need to start on C. If it was the G Major Scale then we
would start on G, and so on…

______
C , ______ , ______ , ______ , ______ , ______ , ______ , ______
1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th 6th 7th 8th
LET’S BUILD THE C
MAJOR SCALE
-
Step 2: After the 1st note, C, the next pitch must be a whole step above. So in this case we start on
C, skip C#, and go to D.

______
C , ______
D , ______ , ______ ,
______ , ______ , ______ , ______
1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th 6th 7th 8th
LET’S BUILD THE C
MAJOR SCALE
-
Step 3: After the 2nd note, D, the next pitch must be a whole step above. So in this case we start
on D, skip D#, and go to E.

______
C , ______
D , ______
E , ______ ,
______ , ______ , ______ , ______
1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th 6th 7th 8th
LET’S BUILD THE C
MAJOR SCALE
-
Step 4: After the 3rd note, E, the next pitch must be a half step above. So in this case we start on E
and go to F.

______
C , ______
D , ______
E , ______
F ,
______ , ______ , ______ , ______
1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th 6th 7th 8th

Step 5: After the 4th note, F, the next pitch must be a whole step above. So in this case we start on
F, skip F#, and go to G.

______

E , ______
F, G

Step 6: After the 5th note, G, the next pitch must be a whole step above. So in this case we start on
G, skip G#, and go to A.

E , ______
F , G A
______ , ______ , ______ , ______

Step 7: After the 6th note, A, the next pitch must be a whole step above. So in this case we start
on A, skip A#, and go to B.

______

Step 8: After the 7th note, B, the next pitch must be a half step above. So in this case we start on
B and go to C. The first and last pitches should be the same letter.

______
