Chapter # 1:Company Profile

Introduction:
Samsung, South Korean company that is one of the world’s largest producers of
electronic devices. Samsung specializes in the production of a wide variety of
consumer and industry electronics, including appliances, digital media devices,
semiconductors, memory chips, and integrated systems. It has become one of the
most-recognizable names in technology and produces about a fifth of South
Korea’s total exports.
Samsung was founded as a grocery trading store on March 1, 1938, by Lee Byung-
Chull. He started his business in Taegu, Korea, trading noodles and other goods
produced in and around the city and exporting them to China and its provinces.
After the Korean War, Lee expanded his business into textiles and opened the
largest woolen mill in Korea. He focused heavily on industrialization with the goal
of helping his country redevelop itself after the war. During that period his
business benefited from the new protectionist policies adopted by the Korean
government, whose aim was to help large domestic conglomerates (chaebol) by
shielding them from competition and providing them easy financing.
During the 1970s the company expanded its textile-manufacturing processes to
cover the full line of production—from raw materials all the way to the end
product—to better compete in the textile industry. New subsidiaries such as
Samsung Heavy Industries, Samsung Shipbuilding, and Samsung Precision
Company (Samsung Tech-win) were established. Also, during the same period, the
company started to invest in the heavy, chemical, and petrochemical industries,
providing the company a promising growth path.
Samsung first entered the electronics industry in 1969 with several electronics-
focused divisions—their first products were black-and-white televisions. During
the 1970s the company began to export home electronics products overseas. At that
time Samsung was already a major manufacturer in Korea, and it had acquired a 50
percent stake in Korea Semiconductor.

Chapter # 2:Organizational Structure

Organizational Structure:

Samsung’s organizational structure is designed to promote technological

innovation throughout the enterprise. Technological innovation is at the heart of
the company’s strategies, as seen through rapid innovation involving smartphones
and other consumer electronics. Structural facilitation contributes to the
Page 10

effectiveness of implementing Samsung’s generic competitive strategy and

intensive strategies for growth. The corporate structure is also a manifestation of
the evolution of the business from a small trading firm into a diversified
multinational enterprise that offers advanced technologies. Considering its
organizational structure’s involvement in diverse operations, Samsung employs
various operations management strategies for different markets and industries. The
conglomerate’s organizational design and structural system covers various markets
and industries related to the development and utilization of technologies, such as
computing technologies. Effective market penetration and market development
strategies are enabled through Samsung’s corporate structure, which also
empowers competitive advantages to support business continuity and success in an
increasingly saturated and aggressive competitive landscape.

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. and sister companies and subsidiaries form the
organizational structure of the Samsung Group. In this internal analysis, it is
illustrated that the corporate structure of the technology conglomerate is applied
throughout its operations. For example, the organizational structural characteristics
of Samsung Electronics are the same as the structural characteristics of the
conglomerate. This consistency in the corporate structure helps streamline the
company’s operations, especially in keeping its competitive advantages against
many aggressive firms, including Apple, Google, Sony, Intel, Dell, Acer, and
Lenovo.

Samsung’s Organizational Structure Type and Characteristics

Samsung has a product-type divisional organizational structure. This structure
type uses product categorization as the basis for determining which resources and
business operations belong to certain divisions, such as the company’s Device
Solutions division. The entire corporate structure is unified via Samsung’s
headquarters, which are located in Seoul. Strategic management directions from
the corporation’s headquarters are implemented through strategic objectives
specific to the structural divisions’ contexts, such as the context of the U.S. market
for consumer electronics. Samsung’s corporate structure has the following main
characteristics:

1. Product-type divisions
2. Centralized corporate hierarchy
3. Geographical groupings
Page 11

Product-Type Divisions. Samsung’s organizational structure’s main characteristic

is its product-type divisions. Each division is a group of resources and operations
that represent a product category, such as resources and operations for the
production, distribution, and sale of consumer electronics. The corporate
structure’s emphasis on technological innovation and product development in these
divisions helps in achieving Samsung’s corporate vision and mission statements.
The technology conglomerate may add, merge, or disband divisions, depending on
current business needs and the development of the organization, considering that
further business diversification is possible. The following are the product-type
divisions in Samsung organizational structure:

1. Consumer Electronics
2. Device Solutions
3. IT & Mobile Communications

Centralized Corporate Hierarchy. Samsung’s corporate structure involves a

hierarchical model, despite its product-type divisions. The corporate headquarters
are the most notable manifestation of this hierarchy, which is part of an
organizational design for ensuring that the conglomerate’s operations are unified
and effectively directed towards growth and operational effectiveness. This
characteristic of the organizational structure involves centralization of overall
strategic planning, as well as vertical lines of command and authority that relay
strategic directions from the headquarters to the daily operations in the Consumer
Electronics, Device Solutions, and IT & Mobile Communications divisions.

Geographical Groupings. Samsung uses geographical groupings or divisions as a

minor characteristic of its corporate structure. In the company’s organizational
chart, these geographical divisions are generally under the product-type divisions.
For example, Samsung Electronics North America is a geographical division
within Samsung Electronics, which is a product-type division. Through this
characteristic of the organizational structure, the company implements region-
specific strategies, such as strategies intended for the North American market for
Device Solutions.

Samsung’s Corporate Structure’s Advantages & Disadvantages

Advantages. Samsung’s corporate structure has the advantage of extensive support
for product development, especially in terms of technology and innovation. This
support comes through the structural framework of the conglomerate’s product-
type divisions. Another advantage of this organizational structure is the company’s
Page 12

ability to fine-tune its strategies and operations based on market characteristics.

This is possible through the geographical groupings or divisions within the
product-type divisions, such as IT & Mobile Communications. These structural
advantages couple with the strengths shown in the SWOT analysis of Samsung to
buttress the business against fierce competition. In this way, the organizational
structure supports the company’s competitive advantage, especially against major
competitors like Apple Inc.

Disadvantages. Samsung’s organizational structure has the disadvantage of

limited autonomy of the product-based divisions. For example, because of the
centralized hierarchy, the product-based divisions need to follow strategic
directives from the company’s headquarters in Seoul. Nonetheless, this structural
hierarchy is necessary to keep Samsung’s entire organization unified toward its
mission and vision involving superior technology and technological products. In
relation, the corporate structure presents challenges in expanding the business in
regional markets, considering the low priority given to the geographical groupings.
Nonetheless, Samsung’s corporate culture helps in minimizing the negative effects
of these structural disadvantages. Also, its current global success means that the
technology company effectively uses the advantages of its corporate structure in
spite of the disadvantages

Chapter # 3:Analysis of Mission & Vision Statement

Samsung’s Mission Statement:-
Samsung’s mission statement is “We will devote our human resources and
technology to create superior products and services, thereby contributing to a better
global society.” This corporate mission was published in the 1990s, when the
company was undergoing rapid global expansion in various semiconductors,
electronics, and related technology markets. Based on its business operations and
current international industry positioning, Samsung focuses on the following
components in its corporate mission:
1. Human resources and technological resources
2. Superiority of products and services
3. Improvement of the global society
In its mission statement, Samsung identifies human resources and technology as
the two main assets that it uses to pursue its purpose and strategic objectives in its
global industries. This component of the corporate mission requires that the
company maintain highly competitive compensation packages and related human
resource administration and development programs to attract sufficient talent while
competing against technology giants like Apple Inc. and Google LLC. Considering
the significance of human resources, Samsung’s corporate culture is a determining
factor in fulfilling its corporate mission. On the other hand, superiority of products
and services is at the core of fulfilling the consumer electronics company’s
corporate mission. Such superiority emphasizes the importance of strategic
management that directs decisions at Samsung’s headquarters toward operational
effectiveness for high quality organizational outputs in various technology
markets. In a way, this component of the mission statement pushes the corporation
to ensure an effective value chain and achieve its value proposition, such as
effective and high quality consumer electronics. Furthermore, the corporate
Page 14

mission targets positive contributions to improve the global society, leading to

Samsung’s generic strategy, intensive growth strategies, and strategic objectives
that include the provision of high quality products, such as smartphones, laptops,
and home appliances. In relation, to achieve a positive global impact, the company
has embarked on various multinational acquisitions, such as the purchase of
Harman International Industries, which now operates as a subsidiary of Samsung
Electronics. Global scope and societal improvement are factors that link the
mission statement with the technology corporation’s vision statement.

Samsung’s Vision Statement:-

Samsung’s corporate vision is to “Inspire the world with our innovative
technologies, products and design that enrich people’s lives and contribute to
social prosperity by creating a new future.” The company follows this vision
statement to maintain profitable technology business operations that contribute to
the improvement of people’s lives. Samsung frequently refers to a shortened
version of this corporate vision: “Vision 2020: Inspire the World, Create the
Future.” The company extensively implements this statement throughout its
subsidiaries’ operations in the consumer electronics, computing technology, and
semiconductors industries. The following components are contained in Samsung’s
vision statement:
1. Global inspiration
2. Innovation
3. Improvement of lives and future social prosperity
Based on its vision statement, Samsung’s strategic objectives include the
development of products that inspire. This inspirational aspect requires the
company to consider local and regional market conditions to ensure that its
technological products actually inspire people despite differences in their societal
situations. Samsung’s corporate vision also pushes for a high degree of innovation.
Technological innovation is especially notable in the company’s products, such as
smartphones and laptops. Moreover, the vision statement indicates strategic efforts
that include Samsung’s corporate social responsibility strategy for improving
people’s lives and contributing to social prosperity. This corporate vision means
that the company sees itself as a mover and major contributor to the world’s
improvement through consumer electronics, semiconductors, and other products
that add value to people’s lives and society. In a way related to the mission
Page 15

statement, Samsung’s corporate vision includes a global scope of application and

the aim of contributing to societal improvement.

worldwide operation is complicated and problematic.
Base on the double digit decrease of its operating profit against the other year, it
indicates that its operating cost had also went up by more than 20%. Its operation
had not been efficient enough to yield a good profit.
Samsung as a South Korean company is reckoned by most customer as only next

Page 17

Chapter # 5:Pest Analysis

Pest Analysis:
Samsung PEST Analysis examines the various external factors like political,
economic, social, technological factors. The PEST Analysis highlights the different
extrinsic scenarios which impact the business of the brand.
Political Factors:
The political factors in the Samsung PEST Analysis can be explained as follows:
Political stability plays a major role in the success of an organization. A company
thrives if the major political factors are conducive to its operations. Apart from
facing some minor irritants in India, Samsung has faced political pressures in
African and Latin American countries. Any country where the political
environment is unstable and prone to volatile changes in the current government
structure is prone to lead to business disruption and loss of business. Good trade
relations between two countries is another key factor that has a direct impact on
business. Recently, Samsung faced major drawbacks in its home country South
Korea because of the country’s strained relations with North Korea. Currently the
company operates in more than 80 countries and fear of terrorism poses another
major challenge to the smooth functioning of the business. However, countries
such as China and India present a favorable business environment to the company
which helps it to exploit the market opportunities that such emerging economies
present with them.
Economic Factors:
Page 18

Below are the economic factors in the PEST Analysis of Samsung:

Economic crisis can adversely affect consumer’s disposable income, especially in
the developed nations. This forces a company like Samsung to expand profitable
ventures in emerging nations. High volatility in the stock markets and constant
fluctuations in exchange rates can have serious implications on the financial health
of the business. Although Samsung did survive the crisis that hit Korean economy.
The company earned around KRW 200.7 trillion, even when Korea was facing
higher household debts. Even though such companies are affected by the economic
conditions they also have an important impact on the economy as they recruit
thousands of employees. Nevertheless, a low level of employment results in lower
levels of disposable income in the hands of the people to spend on electronic
devices.
Social Factors:
Following are the social factors impacting Samsung PEST Analysis:
This factor comprises of customs, traditions and practices that differ from one
group to another. The difference in social status affects demand of the products as
well as willingness of the people to work. Samsung has successfully incorporated
its strategy of global thinking and acting locally. Even after expanding across a
large number of countries, Samsung has had to customize its products according to
the needs of the local customers. Rapidly changing consumer preferences can have
both positive and negative implications for the business where it can affect one
business positively and the other one negatively. Brands like Samsung have to take
care of such socio-cultural forces when focusing strategizing their marketing
efforts. Samsung’s smart phones and tablets have adapted well to the demand for
large screen smart phone and mobile gadgets. At the same time its galaxy series
has been quite popular across major markets. The company also acts in an ethical
manner and accepts the fact that corruption can seriously have negative
implications on the brand worth of the company.
Technological Factors:
The technological factors in the PEST Analysis of Samsung are mentioned below:
Nowadays, in order to communicate a unique image of its brand every brand is
trying to harness the power of technology to its best advantage. Samsung, being a
technology company has been able to drive innovation to its competitive
advantage. The visionary company has ceaselessly launched innovative products in
the market. The company also makes use of a variety of digital technology for
marketing and establishing unique customer relationships. In the United States
Page 19

there is availability of well - developed cellular networks acts as a direct support

for use of such mobile devices. Such infrastructure is critical for ensuring a smooth
customer experience where data and voice transfers occur seamlessly without any
delays. If a country experiences extreme weather conditions such as hurricane or
storm it can easily disable network resulting in customer dissatisfaction. Besides,
this the company invests heavily into the field of research and development. The
extensive research blended with the expertise in the field of technology has made
Samsung’s SUHD televisions a special attraction for the customers.

To conclude, the above Samsung PEST Analysis highlights the various elements
which impact its business performance

.
Chapter # 7:Manufacturing Process OF SAMSUNG
Manufacturing Process:

In order to perform manufacturing processes effectively and completing the entire

development cycle for the electronics products, Samsung Electronics use several
well-planned stages (Suh et al. 2016). These stages are arranged in such a fashion
that the product development can be time and cost effective. The major stages used
in Samsung Electronics are described below.

Conceptualization:

Samsung Electronics continuously attempt to formulate a new concept of products

based on advanced technologies. It can be a new product or development of
variances of the existing products in the market.

Research:

After developing the product concept, Samsung Electronics greatly emphasizes on

the identification of suitable technology, vendors as well as methods for the
production of the products (Lee et al. 2016).

Circuit Design:
Page 21

Samsung Electronics uses several computers drafting software in order to develop

a schematic diagram. In addition to that, the company also generates a preliminary
parts list for prototyping as well as costing the product.

Packaging And Printed Circuit Design:

Samsung Electronics focuses on developing of attractive enclosure design as well

as selection. After that, the company designs the outline of the printed circuits. The
major steps for this stage are

 Selection of package style

 Design of graphics and nomenclature
 Resolving the requirements of printed circuit diagram
 Processing the printed circuit artwork on film
Developing Prototype:

Samsung Electronics develops a prototype product for the trial purpose. However,
it is also noted that often hand-wired prototype products are used for the design
process.

Design Review:

Samsung Electronics extensively focuses on evaluating the appearance, function,

possible enhancements as well as build cost of the initial units as well as prototype
products.

Test Setup:

In order to ensure the quality of the products Samsung Electronics places the
apparatus, test procedures, detailed instruction of assembly as well as fixtures.

Documentation:

This stage is focused on providing the project's deliverables. This deliverable

includes list of parts circuit diagram, parts sources, master printed circuit artwork,
mechanical drawings, software source code as well as assembly drawings (Lee et
al. 2013).

Agency Compliance:
Page 22

According to the current law and regulation, Samsung Electronics requires several
agency compliance s.

Following Up:

Samsung Electronics actively review the supporting data of products, user response
as well as experience of manufacturing facility. It is a major factor for improving
the lower cost, value, and quality.

Page 24

Five Operational Performance Of Samsung

Five operational performance of an organization is evaluated by the following

factors,

 Quality
 Speed
 Dependability
 Flexibility
 Cost
Operational performance of Samsung is described below,

Quality: Samsung has standard optimization functions such as automatic neighbor

relation, capacity coverage optimization and cell outage compensation. They also
have unique features including drive test optimization; transmit power control and
antenna tilt optimization. These features ensure a high quality operations
management of Samsung. They also have smart scheduler that monitors all cells
and centralizes radio resources management (Szeremeta 2013). This improves the
pattern of allocation in order to maximize throughput.

Speed: Samsung’s network speed is excellent. Their operations and analytic tools

are designed to monitor, manage and troubleshoot the network in real or near real-
time. They have combined combine their smart SON and smart scheduler with
cognitive analytics. In this way, their operators can load and allocate resources
faster than any other organization. As a result, inefficiencies are reduced that helps
to optimize their QoS and QoE (Szeremeta 2013).

Dependability: 3-bit MLC NAND flash technology of Samsung helps them to

ensure reliability of their operations. Their Self-monitoring, analysis and reporting
technology which is also known as SMART, helps to detect and report on various
reliability indicators. Whenever a failure is estimated, the SMART technology
warns the operators. Therefore, they can immediately replace the ailing drives that
help to evade any type of data loss or unexpected outages (Yoon et al. 2016).

Flexibility: Samsung’s operations are highly flexible because of their superior

supply chain management. Recently, the organization made seven changes in their
supply chain operations that helped them to make their operations more flexible
than before. Those changes are,

Samsung is all set to understand their customer behavior by sending employees to

attend MBA programs at the local universities. At macro level, they collect
Page 25

preferences of the consumers. Those preferences are then incorporated into the
product design through a method that is known as “Quality Function Deployment.”

Samsung is trying to enhance the internal operations using six-stigma model. They
have adopted an approach called “DMAEV” that means define, measure, analyze,
enable and verify (Szeremeta 2013).

time to ensure customer satisfaction. In order to achieve this goal, Samsung continuously
improves productivity by controlling variations in various processes in a stable way. Continuous
improvement is implemented by a closed loop methodology consisting of a selection of critical
parameters, evaluation of the measurement system, monitoring of critical parameters, process
capability improvement, and reaction plan. The main purpose of the CIP activities is minimizing
the deviations from the target.

Implementation strategy

To be successful in satisfying business expectation, Samsung selects and develops reliable
suppliers/subcontractors (hereinafter referred to as ”suppliers”). Each supplier’s performance is
continuously assessed and periodically (typically once a year) conducted in-depth audit in terms
of technology, quality, delivery, cost, and finance. Suppliers are notified of the evaluation results
and their improvement activities are driven.
Materials qualification

Samsung ensures materials with stable quality and supply capability by following the
certification procedure. The procedure is designed to validate product conformity, supply risk
assessment and production capability through supplier self-checklist and manufacturing site
audit.

Chapter # 8:Executive Summary:-

Advancements in mobile technology have transformed the communication,

commerce, and financial industries and now mobile technology is set to
revolutionize the future of health care. Innovation in the mobile health ecosystem
is a multi-billion-dollar opportunity and has never been easier than now. This paper
talks about major adoption barriers in mobile health by categorizing them into
consumer-oriented and provider-oriented barriers, finding commonalities, and
highlighting the fact that barriers from each group can relate to one another with a
feedback loop. We describe three key barriers that can be overcome through
technology namely (1) data security and privacy, (2) device data integration, and
(3) data-driven insights. On the latter, we advocate that the interplay of small data
and big data analysis has beneficial value from a computational aspect and creates
enhanced analytical insight to help build impact full engagement strategies.
We present Samsung’s S Health and Digital Health SDK to showcase how our
technology platform can address and overcome above mentioned key barriers. In
this regard, we outline how our platform empowers consumers and providers to
consume and create meaningful mobile health experiences.
Lastly, we encourage the reader to think beyond and take health to the next level
by introducing the notion of innovation synergy, a concept that encourages the
combination and thoughtful integration of Samsung’s diverse technology
ecosystem.
