Oriental Self: Filipinoness Is Simply How We Value, How Much We Practice, The Filipino Culture
Oriental Self: Filipinoness Is Simply How We Value, How Much We Practice, The Filipino Culture
- The goal is to examine our own conceptualization of the self-- are we more inclined to
Western or Eastern views of the self
- We determine this by studying how the West perceives/ defines the East
FILIPINONESS
- being proud of our own indigenous culture, own products and own innovations, as such.
- Acceptance of anything Filipino
- continues to transform and evolve because of migration as part of Filipino’s economic
reality
- Dramatic change of the Philippine cultural landscape from pre-colonization presence of
babaylan, to colonial influence, to the migration of Filipinos in the US
Filipinoness is simply how we value, how much we practice, the Filipino culture
2 genocide; colonialism
3 orientalism; war
- Survival strategies against white supremacy often backfires as the settler society
unintentionally participates in the system of white supremacy
In the reading:
Filipino Americans are said to be forced to assimilate (be accustomed to) to Western customs
KAPWA
- a core Filipino value
- awareness of the shared identity
- antithesis of INDIVIDUALISM
*individualism is commonly practiced(??) in the Western culture, they don’t usually
interact and are independent in most circumstances
- collectivism and group welfare
Whereas sustaining the idea of kapwa can be hard for 2nd gen Filipino Americans because the
individualism and the concept of kapwa is clashing. -
- very crucial because of the legacies of colonialism, white supremacy, and the
oppressive impact on our core value
- There are pressures in subscribing to the dominant culture, which also
associated with colonial mentality
Filipino Americans establish an ingroup with other minority groups in similarities of oppression,
thus the creation of “Asian American”
DECOLONIZATION is a big part of Filipino identity development. What unites our kapwa is our
“loob” through the rediscovering of “Filipinoness” in a settler society. Mamuyac (2020) uses
Decolonizing Methodology to touch bases of both the process of decolonization and the different
dimensions of Fil-Am intersecting identities of the complex settler society.
LOSING KAPWA
How Filipino Americans have “lost” their kapwa
- conservative catholic religion
- limited tagalog skills
- It’s the not Filipino or the other nationality enough
This then raises the sense of isolation among their own kapwa Filipinos. These are examples in
participating in the system of white supremacy
FINDING KAPWA
- Finding a community to be apart of
- Sense of belongingness
- Shows inherent desire to learn more about their cultures
- Representation and enculturation
- Confrontation of their internal and external conflicts
- Conquered insecurity in increasing representation of one's culture and ethnic
background
REIMAGINING KAPWA
- How they defne kapwa:
- A sense of belonging; union
- Instant comfort w other filipinos because of a shared identity
- A family in a society where you care for one another; not only thinking of kapwa as a
shared cultural background, but as a societal commitment across ethnic boundaries.
- Reinventing kapwa against white supremacy and challenges being amongst a different
dominant culture.
WESTERN VS EASTERN
WESTERN
- Separation between philosophy and spirituality
- Scholaticism, rationalism, empiricism, phenomenology
- Reason rather than faith
- Egocentric
- Distinction and oppositions- how are you different from others
- Self actualization thru personal growth
EASTERN
- Religion and philosophy are intertwined
- Hinduism, Buddhism, Confucianism, Taoism
- Intuition associated with religious beliefs
- sociocentric
- Commonalities and harmonies- in harmony with other people, the universe
- Achieve a balanced life and finding the role in society
