Module 4 Activity

Part 1: Order of Subject, Object, and Verb

Assignment Questions:
1. What was the word order of classical Chinese? Subject-Verb-Object (SVO).
2. What was the word order of Egyptian? Verb-Subject-Object (VSO).
3. Relate each answer back to the reading "Order of Subject, Object, and Verb in the
World Atlas of Linguistic Structures"
According to the World Atlas of Language Structures, the typical word order for classical
Chinese is Subject-Verb-Object (SVO). This word order is unique to a small portion of the
Asian continent. The most common word order for the majority of Asia is the Subject-
Object-Verb (SOV) order. However, in China, across parts of Indonesia, the western
Pacific, some areas of Europe and the Mediterranean, the SVO word order prevails. In
the Egyptian language, the typical word order is Verb-Subject-Object (VSO). Many of the
established languages in western Europe, such as Latin, are Subject-Object-Verb (SOV)
languages, but several languages used in this area of the world are VSO. The VSO
structure is also prominent across the area that covers the Middle East, including the
various versions of Arabic. (Dryer, 2013)

Part 2: Map 81A

Assignment Questions:
1. What is the predominant word order in Northeastern Asia (Japan, Korea, Siberia)? For
Japanese and Korean, the word order is Subject-Object-Verb (SOV). For Yupik, there is
no dominant word order. (Dryer, 2013)
2. What are the two predominant word orders in the native languages of the state of
Washington in the United States? Verb-Subject-Object (VSO) and Verb-Object-Subject
(VOS).
3. What is the predominant word order of Hawaiian? Verb-Subject-Object (VSO).
4. What is the predominant word order in the languages of India? The dominant word
order in India is Subject-Object-Verb (SOV), except in the Kharia language where there is
no dominant word order.
5. Relate each answer back to Map 81A and the reading "Order of Subject, Object, and
Verb in the World Atlas of Linguistic Structures" (50-100 words).
The Order of Subject, Object and Verb map shows that in Northeastern Asia, there are a
couple of word order scenarios. For Japanese and Korean, the word order is Subject-
Object-Verb (SOV). In the Yupik language, principally the language of Siberia, there is no
dominant word order. There are several native languages in Washington State. These
include Sahaptin, Quileute, Kalispel, Makah and Chinook. The dominant word order for
most of these languages is Verb-Subject-Object (VSO), while the Chinook language has a
word order of Verb-Object-Subject (VOS). The dominant word order of native Hawaiian is
the word order Verb-Subject-Object (VSO). Across most of the languages of India,
including Hindi, Urdu, and Panjabi, the word order is Subject-Object-Verb (SOV), except
for the Kharia language which has no dominant word order. This area seems far
removed from the larger urban areas of India and could be an isolated bubble where
this language is still spoken. (Dryer, 2013)
