5. Course Description (Catalog Description):
Covers feedback system response, feedback control system characteristics, performance and stability
of feedback control systems, root locus techniques, frequency domain analysis and design of
feedback control systems.
6. Textbook and other Supplemental Material:
Textbook:
N.S. Nise, Control Systems Engineering, 8th edition or later, Wiley.
Supplemental:
R. Dorf and R. Bishop, Modern Control Systems, Prentice Hall.
7. Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:
1. Identify transient performance for open loop and closed loop system configurations
2. Identify dynamic system stability for open loop and closed loop system
3. Identify steady state error for feedback systems
4. Construct root locus of closed-loop systems and analyze performance requirements
5. Design PID and lead-lag controllers for a given engineering problem using root locus
6. Use Matlab to simulate the response of feedback systems and analyze the results

The RESPONDUS Lockdown browser plus monitor will be used to perform online exams. The
project will involve all the phases of designing a controller for a desired behavior of a practical
control system. Students will do modelling, uncompensated response, and compensated response.
They will present simulations using Matlab and write a technical report.
