General Layout of Automobile

Frame, Engine , Clutch, GB, Propeller Shaft, Diff. GB, Rear Axle, Front Axle,Wheels
Mechanical Engineering Department, Y. B. Patil Polytechnic, Pune. (Inst Code- 0134)
Types of Automobiles Layout

1. Front Engine Rear Wheel Drive: (FERWD)

2. Rear Engine Rear Wheel Drive: (RERWD)
3. Front Engine Front Wheel Drive: (FEFWD)
4. Four / All Wheel Drive: (4WD)
5. Articulated Vehicle Layout: (AVL)

Mechanical Engineering Department, Y. B. Patil Polytechnic, Pune. (Inst Code- 0134)

Types of Automobiles Layout

1. Front Engine Rear Wheel Drive: (FERWD)

Types of Automobiles Layout

1. Front Engine Rear Wheel Drive: (FERWD)

Advantages
• Even weight distribution – provides good handlings characteristics.
• Large luggage space is provided behind the rear seats.
• Maintenance and accessibility of engine, gear box is easy and the control over the accelerator, clutch, choke
simple.
• Radiator Cooling is natural(by air) so decreases the power require for cooling.
• Better braking efficiency
• For easy front wheel steering movement engine occupies the reduced width between the wheels arches.
Disadvantages
• Reduces back seats leg room space.
• A tunnel is needed for the propeller shaft.
• Reduces boot space.
• Length of transmission line increases
• Propeller shaft is required.
• Heavier and more expensive.
• If stuck in mud or snow it is harder to drive away than in front wheel drive car.
• Driver exposed to more vibration so less visibility.
Types of Automobiles Layout

2. Rear Engine Rear Wheel Drive: (RERWD)

Types of Automobiles Layout

2. Rear Engine Rear Wheel Drive: (RERWD)

Advantages
• Excellent traction
• Larger passenger space is available
• Reduced Length of transmission line.
• Very compact and accessible power and transmission assembly is provided.
• Lot of weight at the back improves acceleration and braking, rear wheels and disc brakes can be designed to
take bigger amount of braking due to weight distribution.
• Passengers are comfortable from engine noise, heat and fumes.
• Front of the vehicle provides good visibility.
• Disadvantages;
• At high speed relatively high proportions of weight at the rear axle will make the unstable at speed.
• There is a strong tendency for the vehicle to oversteer.
• Space utilized for engine compartment is wasted.
• The space at the front has to be reduces to allow for the steering lock of the front wheel.
• Natural cooling of radiator is not possible.
• The wheels gets turns too sharply due to tendency of the vehicle to over steer.
Types of Automobiles Layout

3. Front Engine Front Wheel Drive: (FEFWD)

Types of Automobiles Layout

3. Front Engine Front Wheel Drive: (FEFWD)

Advantages
• Reduced Length of transmission line or neglects the propeller shaft
• This type of arrangement provides optimum passenger space and a flat floor line resulting
in a transverse underfloor- longitudinal engine position.
• Good grip with road surface due to engine weight at front.
• The chance of wheel skidding and slipping is very much reduced.
• Natural air cooling of the radiator due to motion of vehicle.
• Power required for cooling is reduced.
• It provides UNDER-STEER characteristics which is always preferred.
Disadvantages
• Reduces back seats leg room space.
• If stuck in mud or snow it is harder to drive away than in front wheel drive car.
• Driver exposed to more vibration so less visibility.
Types of Automobiles Layout

4. Four / All Wheel Drive: (4WD)

Types of Automobiles Layout

4. Four / All Wheel Drive: (4WD)

Advantages
• Traction is nearly doubled compared to a two wheel drive layout.
• Handling characteristics in normal conditions can be configured to emulate FWD OR
RWD.
• Useful to run the vehicle in hilly or terrain area or off-road conditions.
Disadvantages
• The manufacturing cost is very high.
• More component and complicate transmission.
• Increase power train mass, rotational inertia and power transmission losses.
• Increased fuel consumption as compared to 2WD.
Types of Automobiles Layout

5. Articulated Vehicle Layout: (AVL)

Learning Outcomes Achieved

• After completion of this video lecture learner are now able to:
1. Classify automobiles.
2. Types of automobile layout
