1. Assuming the signal 𝑥(𝑡) = 2 cos(200𝜋𝑡)(1 + cos(200𝜋𝑡)) is lowpass filtered, where
the cut-off frequency of the LPF is 125𝐻𝑧. The output of the LPF is sampled 150 times
per second. Then, the output of the sampler is lowpass filtered. The cut-off frequency of
this second LPF is 75𝐻𝑧. Determine the output of this second LPF in the time domain
2. Eight message signals are sampled and multiplexed with TDM. The TDM output is
passed through a LPF before transmission. Six of the input signal have a bandwidth of
4𝑘𝐻𝑧 and the other two are band limited to 12𝑘𝐻𝑧.
(a) Identify the minimum sampling rate of the composite signal. Also find the overall
sampling rate
(b) Design an asynchronous TDM for this application assume commutator speed to be
8000 𝑟𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛𝑠/𝑠𝑒𝑐
(c) Compare the transmission bandwidth requirement for part (a) and (b)
3. 24 voice signals are uniformly sampled and then multiplexed with TDM. The sampling
operation uses flat top samples with 1𝜇𝑠 duration. For synchronization an extra pulse of
1𝜇𝑠 duration is added. The highest frequency of each voice signal is 3.4𝑘𝐻𝑧
(a) Calculate the spacing between successive pulses of multiplexed signals by assuming a
sampling rate of 8𝑘𝐻𝑧 .
(b) Repeat for Nyquist rate of sampling
4. The T1 carrier system used in digital telephony multiplexes 24 voice channels based on 8
bit PCM. Each voice signal is put through a LPF with the cut off frequency of 3.4𝑘𝐻𝑧.
The LPF output is sampled at 8𝑘𝐻𝑧. Then a single bit is added at the end of the frame for
the purpose of synchronization. Calculate
(a) Bit duration
(b) Transmission rate
(c) Nyquist Bandwidth
5. For the given signals find the Nyquist rate and Nyquist interval
1
(a) 𝑥(𝑡) = cos(3000𝜋𝑡) cos(1000𝜋𝑡)
2𝜋
𝜋 𝜋
(b) 𝑥(𝑡) = 10cos (2000𝜋𝑡 + 3 ) + 20cos (400𝜋𝑡 + 4 )
8. A TV signal with a bandwidth of 4.2 𝑀𝐻𝑧 is digitally transmitted. Assuming the nyquist
sampling rate and noting 9 bits represent each sample, evaluate the bit rate required to
transmit this TV signal
