Multi-barrier Thickness Measurement (MID-K-GK3)
Magnetic Impulse Defectoscope
Multi-barrier Thickness Measurement Tool (MID-K-GK3)
The Magnetic Impulse Defectoscope (MID-K) is a compact downhole tool designed to investigate the thickness of
a metal casing wall. The main application of the tool is the corrosion monitoring and mechanical integrity surveying
of a well completion. The given defectoscope can be used to locate perforations and for existing perforations
quality control.
Principle of measurement is a complex process which is based on registration of secondary magnetic fields and
multiple parameters such as casing wall thickness and its diameter, wellbore temperature, eccentric distances
between casings, magnetic permeability and electrical conductivity of metal casings.
Applications
• Casing wall thickness determination (single completion).
• Individual wall thickness calculations of casings (dual Completion).
• Determination and location of damaged sections such as cracks (vertical and transversal), ruptures,
and parted collars.
• Determination of zones with external and internal corrosion.
• Location of perforation interval and depths of various completion components

Key Features
• Ability to Adjust decay time window during logging to capture the response of outer casings.
• High resolution
• Through-tubing screening
• Stainless steel scanning
• Well completion monitoring (Corrosion Progress) and Repeatability
3
The relaxation time of the MID coil is approximately 0.5 ms, which is less than that of a conventional defectoscope.
Above figure shows that the MID sensor records the response after 0.5 ms while the sensor of a conventional
defectoscope can only start recording after 4 ms from the start of the decay.
As a result, all conventional defectoscopes cannot scan and evaluate stainless steel pipes because the time
response of non-magnetic steel equals the typical coil relaxation time of a conventional defectoscope.
Specifications
The tool is made of titanium body, which can work in highly corrosive environments.
