eRAN12.0 01 (2016-09-05)
This issue includes the following changes.
2 Overview
2.1 Definition
A common linear receiver sequentially performs channel estimation, equalization,
demodulation, and decoding for received signals. If there is any erroneously decoded
information, the receiver will discard all the decoded information and soft information.
The turbo receiver is applicable to uplink single-input multiple-output (SIMO). It iteratively
processes the soft information provided after the first decoding to improve decoding accuracy
for UEs in weak coverage areas.
2.2 Benefits
If UEs are in areas where uplink coverage is weak and are scheduled using modulation and
coding schemes (MCSs) indicated by indexes 0 to 8, the Improved Uplink Coverage by Turbo
Receiver feature improves the physical uplink shared channel (PUSCH) demodulation
performance and increases the throughput of these UEs.
NOTE
l When there is good channel quality in scenarios such as in LOS or additive white Gaussian noise
(AWGN) scenarios on high-speed railways, this feature does not have any or noticeable benefits.
l Gains of this feature may not be observable during drive tests due to factors such as environmental
vibrations and insufficient UE samples.
Increase in UE Throughput
Scenario Increase in UE Throughput
l Here, "cell edge" refers to high path loss ranges where the UEs account for about 20% of the total
number of UEs in the cell. For example, if UEs in a cell are distributed in path loss ranges indicated
by PL1 to PL14 and UEs in high path loss ranges indicated by PL12 to PL14 account for about 20%
of UEs in the cell, the ranges indicated by PL12 to PL14 are considered to be at the cell edge.
l Low VQIs indicate that voice quality levels are Accept or lower. For details about VQIs, see the
description of measurement-based evaluation in VoLTE Feature Parameter Description.
3 Technical Description
Compared with a common linear receiver, the turbo receiver is characterized by iterative
channel estimation and iterative equalization.
Figure 3-1 shows the iteration process. If there is erroneously decoded information, the
reconstruction module uses soft information provided by the decoder to reconstruct PUSCH
signals. Then, it sends the reconstructed information to the channel estimation and
equalization modules for iterative channel estimation and iterative equalization. The iteration
process improves channel estimation quality and reduces inter-symbol interference, without
prolonging the delay in subsequent reception of decoded information.

5 Network Impact
System Capacity
This feature increases the uplink throughput of UEs in weak coverage areas.
Network Performance
This feature improves the PUSCH demodulation performance, reduces the number of service
drops, access failures, and handover failures caused by PUSCH demodulation failures, and
improves service quality for UEs in weak coverage areas.
If quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) is used in the uplink, there may be some decrease in
the initial block error rate (IBLER), residual block error rate (RBLER), and proportion of UEs
for which small MCS indexes are selected.
6 Engineering Guidelines
l The following indicators are used to help evaluate the number of UEs in weak coverage
areas. If either exceeds 10%, this feature will offer obvious benefits.
– Percentage of UEs with services in path loss ranges indicated by PL10 to PL14 =
(L.Traffic.User.PL10 + ... + L.Traffic.User.PL14) / (L.Traffic.User.PL0 + ... +
L.Traffic.User.PL14) x 100%
– Percentage of times the UE RSRP values detected over the PUSCH are in the
ranges indicated by indexes 0 to 8 = (L.UL.RSRP.PUSCH.Index0 + ... +
L.UL.RSRP.PUSCH.Index8) / (L.UL.RSRP.PUSCH.Index0 + ... +
L.UL.RSRP.PUSCH.Index23) x 100%
