Turbo Receiver Feature Parameter Description 2 Overview

2 Overview

2.1 Definition
A common linear receiver sequentially performs channel estimation, equalization,
demodulation, and decoding for received signals. If there is any erroneously decoded
information, the receiver will discard all the decoded information and soft information.
The turbo receiver is applicable to uplink single-input multiple-output (SIMO). It iteratively
processes the soft information provided after the first decoding to improve decoding accuracy
for UEs in weak coverage areas.

2.2 Benefits
If UEs are in areas where uplink coverage is weak and are scheduled using modulation and
coding schemes (MCSs) indicated by indexes 0 to 8, the Improved Uplink Coverage by Turbo
Receiver feature improves the physical uplink shared channel (PUSCH) demodulation
performance and increases the throughput of these UEs.

NOTE

l When there is good channel quality in scenarios such as in LOS or additive white Gaussian noise
(AWGN) scenarios on high-speed railways, this feature does not have any or noticeable benefits.
l Gains of this feature may not be observable during drive tests due to factors such as environmental
vibrations and insufficient UE samples.

Increase in UE Throughput
Scenario Increase in UE Throughput

Turbo Receiver Feature Parameter Description 2 Overview

Improvement in Voice Quality

Scenario Improvement in Voice Quality

MCS indexes = 0 to 8, and MOS ≤ 3 The MOS increases by 0.1 to 0.2.

MCS indexes = 0 to 8, and MOS > 3 There is not a negative impact.

Benefits Offered to Cells

l The average cell edge throughput increases by 3% to 20%.
l The proportion of low voice quality indicators (VQIs) decreases by 10% to 20%.
NOTE

l Here, "cell edge" refers to high path loss ranges where the UEs account for about 20% of the total
number of UEs in the cell. For example, if UEs in a cell are distributed in path loss ranges indicated
by PL1 to PL14 and UEs in high path loss ranges indicated by PL12 to PL14 account for about 20%
of UEs in the cell, the ranges indicated by PL12 to PL14 are considered to be at the cell edge.
l Low VQIs indicate that voice quality levels are Accept or lower. For details about VQIs, see the
description of measurement-based evaluation in VoLTE Feature Parameter Description.

Turbo Receiver Feature Parameter Description 3 Technical Description

3 Technical Description

Compared with a common linear receiver, the turbo receiver is characterized by iterative
channel estimation and iterative equalization.
Figure 3-1 shows the iteration process. If there is erroneously decoded information, the
reconstruction module uses soft information provided by the decoder to reconstruct PUSCH
signals. Then, it sends the reconstructed information to the channel estimation and
equalization modules for iterative channel estimation and iterative equalization. The iteration
process improves channel estimation quality and reduces inter-symbol interference, without
prolonging the delay in subsequent reception of decoded information.

Turbo Receiver Feature Parameter Description 5 Network Impact

5 Network Impact

System Capacity
This feature increases the uplink throughput of UEs in weak coverage areas.

Network Performance
This feature improves the PUSCH demodulation performance, reduces the number of service
drops, access failures, and handover failures caused by PUSCH demodulation failures, and
improves service quality for UEs in weak coverage areas.
If quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) is used in the uplink, there may be some decrease in
the initial block error rate (IBLER), residual block error rate (RBLER), and proportion of UEs
for which small MCS indexes are selected.

6 Engineering Guidelines

6.1 When to Use Improved Uplink Coverage by Turbo

Receiver
This feature is applicable when there are many UEs in weak coverage areas. Therefore, this
feature is recommended when the percentage of selected MCSs indicated by indexes 0 to 5
exceeds 20%.

6.2 Required Information

l The percentage of selected MCSs indicated by indexes 0 to 5 can be used to evaluate
whether to use this feature on the network. When the percentage exceeds 20%, this
feature is recommended. The counters listed in Table 6-1 can be used for comparison
before and after this feature is used. The observation period for these counters must be
24 hours or longer.
Percentage of selected MCSs indicated by indexes 0 to 5 = (L.ChMeas.PUSCH.MCS.0
+ ... + L.ChMeas.PUSCH.MCS.5) / (L.ChMeas.PUSCH.MCS.0 + ... +
L.ChMeas.PUSCH.MCS.31) x 100%

where n is an integer in [0, 31].

l The following indicators are used to help evaluate the number of UEs in weak coverage
areas. If either exceeds 10%, this feature will offer obvious benefits.
– Percentage of UEs with services in path loss ranges indicated by PL10 to PL14 =
(L.Traffic.User.PL10 + ... + L.Traffic.User.PL14) / (L.Traffic.User.PL0 + ... +

6.3.3 Activation Observation

If the real-time performance monitoring result of the U2000 shows that neither the average
number of used physical resource blocks (PRBs) nor the average number of UEs in a cell is
zero, this feature has taken effect in this cell.

The observation procedure is as follows:

Step 1 Choose Monitor > Signaling Trace > Signaling Trace Management on the U2000 client.

Step 2 Choose Trace Type > LTE > Cell Performance Monitoring, and then double-click Turbo
Receiver (Cell) Monitoring on the Signaling Trace Management tab page.

Step 3 Enter a task name, select an eNodeB to be monitored, and then click Next. Enter the local cell

6.4 Performance Monitoring

After this feature is activated, you can use the counters mentioned in this section for
performance monitoring.

Uplink Cell Throughput in Different Path Loss Ranges

Observe the values of the counters listed in Table 6-3 for 24 hours or longer. After this feature
is activated, the uplink throughout will increase in high path loss ranges (for example, ranges
indicated by PL10 to PL14) as shown in Figure 6-1.

Uplink cell throughput in the path loss range indicated by PLn = (L.Thrp.bits.UE.UL.PLn -
L.Thrp.bits.UE.UL.SmallPkt.PLn) / L.Thrp.Time.UE.UL.RmvSmallPkt.PLn

NOTE

PLn is a path loss range index, where n is an integer in [0, 14].

Uplink MCS Distribution

Observe the values of the counters listed in Table 6-1 for 24 hours or longer. After this feature
is activated, there will be a decrease in the number of times smaller MCS indexes are selected
during scheduling and there will be an increase in the number of times larger MCS indexes
are selected during scheduling, as shown in Figure 6-2.

Uplink BLERs in QPSK Mode

Observe the values of the counters listed in Table 6-5 for 24 hours or longer. After this feature
is activated, the uplink IBLER or RBLER in QPSK mode may decrease.
Uplink IBLER in QPSK mode = L.Traffic.UL.SCH.QPSK.ErrTB.Ibler /
L.Traffic.UL.SCH.QPSK.TB
Uplink RBLER in QPSK mode = L.Traffic.UL.SCH.QPSK.ErrTB.Rbler /

Uplink Voice Quality

Observe the values of the counters listed in Table 6-6 for 24 hours or longer. After this feature
is activated, the proportion of low VQIs will decrease by 10% to 20%. The decreasing
proportion is calculated as follows:
Decreasing proportion = (Proportion of low VQIs before feature activation - Proportion of
low VQIs after feature activation) / Proportion of low VQIs before feature activation x 100%
Proportion of low VQIs = (L.Voice.VQI.UL.Accept.Times + L.Voice.VQI.UL.Poor.Times
