This is to certify that Mr. SIDDARTH P KOCHERI of IV Semester,
BE, Civil Engineering, has successfully completed the assignment
prescribed by the institution in the course Building
Construction & Planning Lab- (BCP) 18CV44, for the
academic year 2020-2021.
The session held by Ar. Deepika mam was highly educational. We learned a lot from the
session. Session was interactive, it was an open session where we got to learn planning of
project from architect point of view. Most important concept we learned is that, how an
architectural planning and planning from a civil engineer go hand in hand in designing and
planning of any construction project taken under consideration. It was first for me learn how
an architect mind work during planning and designing of any construction project.
Some of the key points that mam thought us were:
During producing plan for construction of any structure like house etc, as an architect or civil
engineer we should always consider clients need for the building. What clients except from
his structure so that is or her needs should be meet. For example, some clients need planning
in accordance to vastu so as an architect or civil engineering we consider both aspect of civil
engineering concept and vastu. This is crucial for a civil engineer to meet the expectation of
client for building plan.
Once an architect is contacted by a client, a meeting is called to discuss the project needs and
requirements. Several meetings may take place until both parties are satisfied with the
conceptual design. However, designing an entire building is a huge task for a single person;
architects work with civil and structural engineers to discuss technical issues and the
structural integrity of a building.
Architects are not just involved in the building design phase. Their role is important in every
stage of a project, and this article summarizes their responsibilities. Architects can also help
improve energy efficiency, by designing buildings that maximize natural lighting and
ventilation, while reducing the heating and cooling needs.
From the client’s needs, civil engineer will be able to generate insight into the requirements
of the project. This is where your project planning and architectural design skill comes in and
you put a blueprint together of the design and its specifications. During this process, we are
specifically looking at elements like:
Spatial considerations – this would include the number of users, what space will be
used for if there are any environmental restrictions, the light, the landscape, etc.
Functional requirements – this will include information around how many toilets
the building will need if there are regulations for space, if communal areas are needed,
do certain areas need to link, is a kitchen required, as well as accessibility, etc. All of
these elements will need to be considered in the project planning process when designing
the building.
Design requirements – are there specific materials that need to be utilised, are there
restrictions, do they want to extend at some point, what aesthetic are they going for, etc.
Physical requirements – this would be the physical measurements of the space and
what you have to work with in terms of the land itself, etc.
From the lecture we understood the key role that is played by an architect and civil engineer
during construction of any structure.
As discussed before, architects and civil engineers work together during the planning, design,
and construction phases of building projects. The difference is reflected on the main goal of
each professional.
Architects will focus on the aesthetics, look, feel and functionality of a structure. It is
important to note that architects also have technical knowledge on construction
methods and structural design, but that aspect is mostly delegated to civil engineers.
Civil engineers will concentrate on analysing the structural integrity of the project.
This included making sure the structure will support the loads and forces it will
endure during its lifespan.
By working together, architects and civil engineers can find innovative ways to meet the
client’s vision and requirements. A good working relationship between the two professions
guaranties an effective and successful job.
We even learned how one can use their knowledge to play around planning and designing of
structural element to make them meet clients’ needs instead of going according to text books.
Overall we got to see planning of any structure from architect perspective and what role we
have as a civil engineer during project planning.
