MAINTENANCE
Routine maintenance is scheduled.

Repair of equipment is done timely.

Regular Training is provided to the Plant

Operators.

Efficient Management Information Systems (MIS)

is developed.

Testing of leak detectors and emergency

equipment is done in every 6 months.
STEPS IN QUALITY CONTROL

Use of mobile chlorinators in the area

1 At present Bhandup Water Treatment
Plant collects over 624 tests on the water affected by Water-disease. 6
every day.

In case of large number of cases of water

2 If an unfit sample identified . bound diseases , the water mains are 5
A complete area is surveyed . flushed

WHO Standards 1200 samples per month .

The Quality of water is maintained as per
3 drinking water standards BIS 10500:2012
At present, about 4000 samples per month 4
are collected by water department.
for drinking water.
WATER QUALITY MONITORING
01
For monitoring the quality laboratory
Equipped with modern equipments
have been set up From 1980

02
These laboratories monitor the physical,
chemical and Bacteriological parameters
continuously.

03
For monitoring quality samples are also
taken from stand post provided in the
slum colonies

SCADA (Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition)
Information
SCADA is a system equipped with
V-SAT communication mode, created
for continuous monitoring of the flow
and pressures.
MCC
The Master Control Center (MCC) is
located at Bhandup Complex to
regulate water supply.

Monitoring
The supply from each reservoir is
continuously monitored.

Sub Control Station

There are three sub-control centres
located at Ghatkopar, Vile-Parle and
Malabar Hill.
Problems Faced
Sludge
The backwashed water from the plant
is released into Vihar Lake, which
carries a significant amount of 1
suspended matter

Therefore, a layer of sludge

2 deposits on the meeting point of
backwashed water and Vihar Lake

The water from Vihar Lake is used for

drinking purposes, and hence, an 3
indirect impact of Aluminium on
human health could be possible if
measures are not taken
This deposited sludge could have a
4 direct adverse impact on the flora
and fauna of Vihar Lake
Pipe Bursts

There are occasions of pipe bursts when

water supply is interrupted.

This year 272 No. of leakages

were detected.

60 No. of pipe bursts were detected

Some industries recycle used water and

reuse the same for non-potable purpose.

SCOPE FOR FURTHER STUDIES

Limitation of the Studies:

1. Not possible to visit the Bhandup water treatment plant.
2. Not able to converse with any worker or officers working on the
treatment plants.
3. Unable to give any future suggestions as we don’t have the exact idea
of the problems faced by the water treatment plants.

Suggestions for further Studies:

1. Visit both 1910 MLD and 900 MLD plant.
2. Interact with the staff for gaining information and to understand
the problems faced by the plants.
3. Compare this plant with America’s largest water treatment plant.
4. Try to interview the Chief Engineer for gaining technical
information.
5. Study new technologies around the world which can be used in this
plant.
