ENGG102: Week 10 Tutorial – Student Notes


Centroids and SecondMoment of Area

Student Learning Outcomes (SLO):


This week's activities will focus on Learning Outcomes 1, 2, 3, 5, 6 and 7 as below -
1. Describe the role of abstraction, simplification and the use of assumptions and mathematical
relationships in solving problems encountered by engineers.
2. Develop free body diagrams to analyse the forces and moments acting on and within structural
elements and structural systems.
3. Apply logical engineering design practices to multi-faceted problems involving engineering
mechanics.
4. Describe the impact of the application of engineering mechanics on engineering activities across a
number of engineering disciplines.
5. Demonstrate self-directed learning related to solving problems in engineering.
6. Undertake and present engineering calculations, designs, research and critical analysis in a
professional manner.
7. Work as a productive member of a team, recognising roles, responsibilities and accountabilities of
individuals in a team.

Reminder to all Teams to have their Draft Project 2B Report including their Excel Design Worksheet
ready to show your Tutor in week 11. They MUST be ready to build their new Cantilever Beam.

Task 1: Centroids and 2nd Moment of Area Problems (60 minutes)


Complete the following problems from the text -
F9.8 p479 Hibbeler (p445 in combined book)
9.58 p481 Hibbeler (p447 in combined book)
F10.8 p529 Hibbeler (p495 in combined book)
10.45 p532 Hibbeler (p498 in combined book)
10.26 p530 Hibbeler (p496 in combined book)

For problems F9.8 and 9.58, also find the second moment of area for homework.

Task 2: 2nd Moment of Area Exercise (20 minutes)


Centroidal Model:
1. Students to hold model lightly between their thumb and their middle finger and rote the model by
drawing their middle finger back and forth across their thumb so the model rotates back and
forth.
2. Do this at a slow speed, a medium speed and a fast speed.
3. Note the amount of effort required to do this in each case.
4. Note any other observations.

Non-Centroidal Model:
1. Repeat rotation back and forth as above
2. Do this at a slow speed, a medium speed and a fast speed.
3. Note the amount of effort required to do this in each case
4. Note any other observations..

Questions:
1. Did you notice any difference when rotating the balsa models between the Centroidal model and
the Non-Centroidal model?
2. Were the three speeds of rotation achievable for each model?
3. Why do you think there was a difference between the Centroidal and the Non-Centroidal models?
4. Would this difference cause any increase or decrease in the load on the glued joints in each case?
5. Why do you think this is happening?

Your challenge is to get a feel for the effects of the 2nd Moment of Area for a range of situations.

Task 3: Frames and Trusses Revision Question (30 minutes)


Do Problem F6.10 on page 252 from the Text. Complete this in your teams in class and to check your
solutions using ForceEffect.
Show your Tutor your completed solution using the 6 Step Method before you leave.

Recap (10 minutes)


The main points of the tutorial class -
1. The basic concept and approach to finding Centroids and 2nd Moment of Area.
2. WHAT happened and suggest some reasons WHY? Compare the findings of your 2nd Moment of
Area Exercise. Contribute to a brief class discussion.
3. Frames and Trusses revision question. It's all about Equilibrium and FBDs!
4. Friction revision question. Again it's all about Equilibrium and FBDs! Plus the Limiting Friction
Equation (F = µN)
5. Deadline for the Project 2B Draft Design Report: Teams will bring a copy of this report to class in
week 11 to be sighted by their Tutor. PLUS their Excel Design Worksheet covering predicted
deflection AND required counterbalance mass.
6. Should be well into the Week 7 TASK 4 Questions. Due in week 13 with the Project 2B Final Report.
