How would you define success? Some (1) can / may / might think a comfortable life
with enough material possessions to make life enjoyable and a healthy relationship with
family and friends are enough. Others (2) may / could / can't consider wealth the
measure of success.
But, no matter what you think, you are bombarded daily with coded messages
promoting a specific notion of success. "If you wear this watch," advertisements say,
"you (3) must / will / can succeed in everything you do." "Eat and dress like a model,"
the fashion industry whispers, "and you (4) will / must / can't have the world at your
feet." It (5) might / could / can't work, you think; it's no coincidence that models date
superstars and always look so perfect. What about the entertainment industry? Stars
are usually rich, good-looking and married to other equally beautiful stars. They
consider themselves successful and we believe that it (6) can't / must / may be so. But
they (7) can / will / can't also be moody, selfish, unhappy and lonely. Then we hear
about a star's emotional breakdown and think: "It (8) mustn't / can't / may be true.
They have it all - why would they be desperate?"
At the end of the day, how do we measure success? We (9) must / might / may be
making money or a name for ourselves, raising a family or gaining more knowledge,
and those are wonderful individual goals to pursue. I personally believe success is
measured by how happy with life I am. So, when I catch myself smiling, I think to
myself: "I (10) must / might / will be doing something right," and I try to find what that
thing is and make sure I do it again.
