THEORY:

For low data rate digital communication, the laser can be modulated directly by simply combining
the data signal with the bias of the laser diode. For high data rates external modulation is used. The
laser is subject to a constant bias producing a narrow line width continuous optical carrier. The data
is imposed on the optical carrier by the Mach-Zehnder modulator, external to the laser cavity. The
modulated optical digital signal is transmitted through the Fiber Optic channel of specified length. At
the received end, the optical data is converted to electrical data by the P-I-N photodetector.

PROCEDURE:

1. Install Optisystem Trial Version on your computer.

2. Open new file, drag and drop required system modules from the default library folder.

3. Interconnect the modules as per the Layout in Fig. 4.1

4. Run the simulation and note relevant metrics.

3 Electrical signal at the output of the PIN photodetector (Responsitivity=1 A/W).

CONCLUSION:

The digital optical communication link was simulated. The received optical power was evaluated for variable
fiber length and CW Laser power. The Laser spectrum and received bit sequence waveforms were observed.
For constant attenuation factor, it was observed that the received signal power diminishes with increasing fiber
length leading to distortion in the received bit sequence.
