4.1 Cultural adjustment in the film entitled “My Name is Khan”

A film entitled “My Name is Khan” is a movie tells about person namely Rizvan Khan.
In the movie Khan is a brilliant Indian Muslim, he is very religious person. In the story tells
about the tragedy nine elven in America where the terrorist attack the WTC (world trade center)
and it kills many people there. There are several cultural adjustments in this film, those are:

a. In the beginning of the film when Khan checked by the police in the airport the police
said “do you know Osama Bin Laden?” in this expression showed that the prejudice
done by the police to Khan, we know on that time American thought that all Muslim is
terrorist. On that time, it is known that Osama Bin Laden said as the head of the terrorist
from Afghanistan who presumed as the bomber of WTC
b. In the video also showed when Kahn visits a motel who the owner is Indian person and
the motel attacked by stranger. In this action it shows that how American people hate
Muslim. American people here show racist action, they really won’t if Muslim stays in
America
c. In the film also shows when Khan and Mandira joint to pray for the bomb victims and
Kahn pray in the Muslim religion and people around there look very uncomfortable with
Khan. People around there look at Khan with flat mimic which can be conclude that they
really hate Muslim at all.
d. In the film also showed when Muslim in America attacked by local people because of
the WTC accident and all people there suppose that Muslim is a theorist. In the film tell
that a Muslim employee killed by his boss because the boss think that he is a terrorist.
e. The fil also showed in the American school, the teacher teaches the students and says
“There are many religions in the world, but Muslim is the most aggressive religion” it
can be seen that cause of the nine eleven accident the racism in America getting improve
 significantly. The news spread rapidly and says that Muslim is the most danger religion
in the world.
f. The racism action happened to Hassena, the wife of Khan brother, when Hassena in the
collage there is a stranger who drag out her hijab and say “get out from my county” here
is one action which shows how American people hate Muslim, they suppose that all
Muslim is the assassin.
g. The Khan boys namely Samer also becomes the victim of racism action from American
people, he is killed by American people and they said “Hey, son of Osama” that word is
showing expression of hateful with Muslim in America

All of those finding in the movie that shows that American people do cultural adjustment to
Muslim of American. The American people do that because of the nine eleven accident and
American people directly judge that all Muslim is terrorist. This adjustment also influenced by
some factors such as, media, new, and many more. We can see in the movie that the teacher also
tells the students that Muslim is the most aggressive religion in the world, so automatically the
American is doctrine by their environment. American people discriminate Muslim of American
by spread hoax which tells Muslim is assassin and kill people on behalf of “Jihad”. Those are the
cultural adjustment found in the movie entitled “My Name is Khan”.

4.2. Re-entry adjustment in the film entitled “My Name is Khan”

The fil entitled “My name is Khan” is a film that tells about many cross cultural problems
happened between American People and Muslim people. In the film tells about how American
people hate Muslim because of nine eleven accidents. American people discriminate Muslim and
believe that all of Muslim is terrorist. In the film there is a main character namely “Khan” who
can make American believe that Muslim is not a terrorist. This main character can make people
believe that there is no Islam teach to kill people on behalf of “Jihad”. The researcher here
analyzed that there is re-entry of adjustment in the movie and make sure that Muslim is not a
terrorist.

The first re-entry adjustment in the movie is when Khan help people to repair the church
in the Wilhelmina, Georgia. The church was broken because of the big storm in Georgia. Khan
helps the Christian to repair the church, the action of Khan here shows that the respect to people
from different religion. It can make people getting change their bad perception about Muslim.
The Christian there getting believe that not all Muslim is terrorist. The action of the Khan in
reported by the journalism and rise up it become the news trend in America and it makes all
people know the good action that the Khan do for Christian people. Re-entry of adjustment also
totally change when Khan success to meet the U.S president and he said in the front of citizen of
America “My name is Khan, I’m a Muslim and I am not a terrorist” it makes all of American
people perception about Muslim is totally change.

From the film the researcher also analyzes the event which shows about re-entry
adjustment. The researcher found some fact that in the film there is part where Khan can change
American people perception about Muslim. In this film the researcher also found that many
processes of cultural adjustment and re-entry adjustment which makes this film interesting and
contains a deep moral value about cross cultural understanding.

Discussion

The movie entitled “My Name is Khan” is the movie contains many of cross cultural
value in it. In the movie tells about how the different cultures life in a one place or in one
country. In the beginning of the story showed the that all of the people with different culture life
with peace and suddenly, there is a cultural adjustment after a great accident which on behalf of
culture that makes there is no peace anymore.

According to there are several steps of cultural adjustment those are, firstly is
honeymoon period, this means when people is interest with something new or can be analogous
when the person come to a new place he will very happy. In the film entitled “My Name is
Kahn” this stage shows in the beginning of the movie when people with different culture live
together with peace. The next stage is cultural shock this phase means when there is a new
problem raise related with culture, and the event of caused mental fatigue of individual or group
(citation). In the movie this shows when nine eleven accident happened, this accident of
terrorism action and on behalf Muslim as the bomber. The next stage of cultural adjustment is
Initial adjustment. The initial adjustment here is quite the same with prejudice, where the people
do pre perception without doing a research (stasi). After nine eleven accidents all of Muslim in
America discriminated by American, they supposed that all Muslim is terrorist. The last stage is
mental isolation, this mean is kind of frustration where the people got bad initial adjustment
massively make that people become stressful and can’t express themselves (sitasi). Mental
isolation in the movie showed when Muslim of America becomes victim of racism, bullying and
other discrimination which make Muslim of American feel uncomfortable in their own area.
