SOCIOLOGY

ACTIVITY 1
Answer the following questions briefly. Use the idea of proponents discussed above.

1. How important are peer groups to socialization? In what ways do they

influence individuals throughout the life course?

Peer groups are important in socialization for it gives in a sense of belonging.

Being in a group with people who have your same age, status, or interests makes you
feel like you are not alone and that you belong. It also decreases the risk, of you “losing
yourself” as per Karl Marx’s Theory of Self-Estrangement or Self-Alienation.

Socialization greatly influences an individual, particularly in their childhood days.

As per one of the sources of Self-efficacy, Social Persuasion, individuals who are
verbally persuaded and motivated by others tend to treat problems as challenges they
must conquer, for they become confident. On the other hand, demoralizing statements
given to them will only make them feel afraid and avoid challenging activities.

2. Have you ever observed someone experiencing a self-fulfilling prophecy?

Explain. If you have not personally observed this, use an example from the media,
books, movies, or TV.

I must say that this is very common among my peers. Some think that their
experiences and relationships with their parents are stressful for them, as well as their
parents, that is why some opt or still opts not to have children. I fully respect their
opinion, and I respect that our perception of a family differs.

3. Have you ever experienced role strain or role conflict? Describe the different
roles and how they were strained or conflicted. How did you resolve this?
As an active student since high school, I have experienced a lot of role strains
and role conflicts in my life. Balancing my family responsibilities, academic
responsibilities, social responsibilities, and even responsibilities from joining various
groups and organizations can be considered as a role strain or conflict. One of the
examples in such conflict is when I am supposed to attend a crucial meeting in one of
my organizations, the student council, when a sudden family reunion took place in that
same day, and as my personal plans, that is the day of our rehearsals since I was the
“director” in our section production. I managed to deal with the section production
rehearsals and family reunion, however I really have to sacrifice the meeting. Another
one is when I was called in to a training in campus journalism for Regional qualifiers, yet
I also need to attend our final rehearsal for our competition with my choral group. That
day, I really have to choose one and I chose the choral rehearsals, for journalism
trainings can be done the following day.

I really wasn’t able to resolve such, all I did is do as many things that must be
done, and sacrifice things that won’t fit my schedule due to time constraints.
