Phenothiazine From Diphenylamine
Phenothiazine From Diphenylamine
Diphenylamine
Aim: To prepare and submit Phenothiazine from
Diphenylamine
Chemicals: Diphenylamine, sulphur, iodine
Principle: Heating Diphenylamine and sulphur with
anhydrous aluminium chloride catalyst and result in
crystalization of 2-substituted diphenyl sulphides in
classic synthesis of Phenothiazine.
Procedure:
1. Melt 22g of Diphenylamine,8.2g of sulphur,3.2g of
anhydrous aluminium chloride together.
2. The reaction sets 140-150⁰C with the rapid evaluation
of hydrogen sulfide; by lowering the temperature, a
few degrees the reaction can be slackened.
3. When reaction has moderated, the temperature is
raised to 160⁰C for a time.
4. The melt, after cooling is ground up and extracted
first with water and then with dilute alcohol.
5. The residue consists of almost pure Phenothiazine.
6. It can be recrystallized from alcohol.
7. Report yield and melting point
