Dynamic Spectrum Sharing (DSS) in LTE NR
Dynamic Spectrum Sharing (DSS) in LTE NR
Dynamic Spectrum Sharing (DSS) in LTE NR
Goal?
How?
DSS is a 3GPP R15 technology that allows the deployment of both 4G LTE and 5G
NR in the same frequency band and dynamically allocates spectrum resources
between the two technologies 4G/5G based on user demand.
The idea is to give the service provider a coverage layer for 5G NR in low band
frequencies that are already used by LTE without re farming.
With DSS, when customers move outside 5G Ultra-Wideband coverage area, their
5G-enabled devices will remain on 5G technology using lower bands of spectrum.
Limitations?
Not all actual mobile equipment and modems can support DSS!
Benefits?
- Better 5G coverage, with lower latency and higher quality (in addition to faster
download speeds) for consumers.
- Less Capex: reuse of existing bands
- Efficient TCO
- Avoid re farming costs
- Quick introduction of 5G over a wide area in low/mid bands.
In the nutshell, DSS is a revolutionary new way of rolling out 5G which can be
used in new mid bands (C-band) but also in existing mid bands (800, 1800, 2600),
reusing hardware, spectrum and sites, while increasing new mid- and high-band
investment value.
This means increased coverage with fewer new sites in less time, infrastructure
savings and, ultimately, the chance to be the first to have nationwide coverage in
an extremely cost-efficient way.
DSS has been deployed end of December 2019. Swisscom said it expects to have
90% of its population covered with 5G by year-end thanks to DSS technology but
it is expected that “multiple large customers” will start using DSS around the first
half of 2020.
#Conclusion
DSS provides needed flexibility as users shift from LTE to 5G and also saves the
Capex.
