said. This not only means understanding what the other person is saying and what they mean
to say, but also being able to divide difficult questions into separate parts in order to get to the

a. Listening - the production of meaning through the sense of hearing, which requires
much effort
Strategies for Getting and Processing Information from a Small Talk through Listening
a. Inferencing - This is the act of using clues and relating new information to one’s prior
knowledge to understand its meaning. This may be done by thinking of the denotation
and the connotation of a word. The denotation of a word is its literal or dictionary
meaning, while its connotation is the meaning that the word suggests depending on
Example
The speaker in the short talk says, “Marjorie has been the light of my life ever
since she came into this world. I feed her, I bathe her, and I also provide
all her needs. She’s a baby I want to protect all the time.”
Based on the above lines, we could infer that Marjorie is the speaker’s daughter. The word
light suggests that the speaker has been happy since Marjorie was born. We could infer that
she is really fond of her child even if she did not explicitly say it in her talk.
b. Identifying clues - This may be done by recognizing signposts in the talk. Signposts
are words or phrases that signal key aspects of the work or establish the connection
between ideas or sentences. Some examples of signposts are in conclusion, next, and
c. Prediction - This is the act of anticipating information. This involves thinking about
what the speaker is going to say next or what information he or she is going to convey.
This involves critical thinking and can help in improving one’s listening and thinking
skills. However, it is important for listeners not to make conclusions before the speaker
Example:
A speaker started the talk by sharing a situation that caused him to be anxious.
Next, he proceeded to talk about what he did to deal with the situation. With this, one may
predict that his talk would be about anxiety, its different kinds, and how to deal with anxiety.

There are also other ways for getting information through listening, such as listening for gist
and listening for details. Choosing which of these types one should observe in listening
depends on the listener’s purpose. When one listens for the gist, he or she does so to identify
the main point of the speaker. This is also done to get an overview of a listening text.
Examples of questions to ask when listening for gist:
Listening for details, on the other hand, involves listening in order to obtain
specific information.
