Stand and Deliver

The story is about a teacher who had been engaged with a group of students who
are socially problematic and underestimated. This teacher, Mr. Escalante had a goal of
reforming these students so that their life will be changed and have a brighter future
instead.
The first part of the movie showcased the struggles and strategies of Mr. Escalante
in order to help his students get a real education. This part of the movie is synonymous to
the challenges that most teachers had faced and are still dealing with. Various students
compose a class, and each of them has varying backgrounds and some have been victims of
worst circumstances. Teachers in this situation observe caution in their engagement with
the students especially when they are instilling discipline. In performing their duty,
teachers need to wake up early in the morning to prepare for the day and had to work
overtime for their students’ welfare.
My second observation in the movie is the divergence and influence of Mr. Escalante
that draws concern from his colleagues. Mr. Escalante believed that his students are
capable of doing great things when no faculty in the school ever did. The students had
already experienced discrimination and low expectations from society and this poses a
challenge to Mr. Escalante to further motivate and help his students pass their subjects. In
any institution such as an educational institution, some personnel faces discrimination and
intimidation from higher officials because their good works threatens their administrators
reputation or it may expose their ill doings. A teacher who stands up for the right things
lives a crusade all by himself because others are too afraid to fight for the truth or counter
people in high positions.
My last observation in the movie was the accusation of cheating of the teachers to
the students of Mr. Since all of the students passed the AP calculus, the faculties started to
insinuate issues of cheating. However Mr. Escalante thinks that the insinuations are just
motivated by hatred, discrimination and racial reasons. As a reflection, there will always
come a time that some people may try to bring us down, we may not know the reason
behind but people will always find a way to destroy us. This dirty tactic is not new to our
society. People who have less will fill up their insecurities by pulling others backward. The
key in dealing with this situation is to never let these people pull you down and stand firm
on your principles and beliefs. Mr. Escalante defied all the challenges that had come his way
in order to make something out of the poor and discriminated life of his students. As a
teacher, he earned the respect of his students by empathizing and proving his genuine
concern for them.
One thing that I learned from this movie that teachers should learn as well is that,
we students don’t need perfect teachers hence we need those who work with passion and
put their heart and mind to their job. Most importantly, we need teachers who stand for the
things they believe because it inspires confidence to us students to also not be afraid of
standing for ourselves even though society itself discriminates us. Lastly, is deliver,
idealism and optimism is useless if we let it stay as it is. A teacher is defined on how he/she
implements his/her idealism and on how she deals with the contingencies that will arise.
