PROBLEM SOLVING: KINEMATICS

Evaluate the following problems.

1. With what speed in must an object be thrown to reach a height of 91.5 m (equivalent to one football
field)? Assume negligible air resistance.

Solution:
Since the object is thrown upward, the acceleration due to gravity is negative and the final
velocity will be zero upon reaching the maximum height.

𝑣𝑓2 = 𝑣𝑖2 + 2𝑎𝑑

m
0 = 𝑣𝑖2 + 2 (−9.81 ) (91.5 m)

𝑣𝑖 = 42.37 m/s

2. A dragster accelerates, from rest, to a speed of 112 m/s over a distance of 398 m. Determine the
acceleration (assume uniform) of the dragster.

Solution:

𝑣𝑓2 = 𝑣𝑖2 + 2𝑎𝑑

3. A plane has a takeoff speed of 88.3 m/s and requires 1365 m to reach that speed. Determine the
acceleration of the plane and the time required to reach this speed.

Solution:

5. A baseball is popped straight up into the air and has a hang-time of 6.25 s. Determine the height to
which the ball rises before it reaches its peak. (Hint: the time to rise to the peak is one-half the total
hang-time.)

Solution:
The time required to move to the peak of the trajectory is one-half the total hang time; 3.125 s.

F = 20N

m1 = 2kg

m2 = 3 kg

Solution:
Free Body Diagrams

REF = ma 20N REF = ma T

m1 = 2kg m2 = 3kg

W1

T W2

For m1: For m2:

+↑ ∑ 𝐹𝑣 = 0 +↑ ∑ 𝐹𝑣 = 0

𝐹 = 𝑇 + 𝑊1 + 𝑅𝐸𝐹 𝑇 = 𝑊2 + 𝑅𝐸𝐹
𝐹 = 𝑇 + 𝑚1 𝑔 + 𝑚1 𝑎 𝑇 = 𝑚2 𝑔 + 𝑚2 𝑎
𝐹 = 𝑇 + 𝑚1 (𝑔 + 𝑎) 𝑇 = 𝑚2 (𝑔 + 𝑎)
20 = 𝑇 + 2(9.81 + 𝑎) 𝑇 = 3(9.81 + 𝑎)
20 = 𝑇 + 19.62 + 2a 𝑇 = 29.43 + 3𝑎
𝑇 + 2𝑎 = 0.38 → Eq. ① 𝑇 − 3𝑎 = 29.43 → Eq. ②

From Eq. ①,
0.38 − 𝑇

Substitute this in Eq. ②;
0.38 − 𝑇
𝑇 − 3( ) = 29.43

3. Picture given below shows the motion of two boxes under the effect of applied force. Friction

For box 1:

𝑁1 + 𝐹 sin 37° = 𝑊1
m
𝑁1 + (30 N) sin 37° = (3 kg) (9.81 )
s2
𝑁1 + 18.05 N = 29.43 N
𝑁1 = 11.38 N
+
→ ∑ 𝐹ℎ
𝐹 cos 37° = 𝑇 + 𝑅𝐸𝐹1 + 𝐹𝑓1
𝐹 cos 37° = 𝑇 + 𝑚1 𝑎 + 𝑘𝑁1
(30) cos 37° = 𝑇 + (3)𝑎 + (0.4)(30)
23.96 = 𝑇 + 3𝑎 + 12
𝑇 + 3𝑎 = 11.96 → 𝐸𝑞. ②

Subtract Eq.① from Eq. ②;

4𝑎 = 8.04

m
𝑎 = 2.01
s2
Substitute the value of a in Eq.①;

For box 1:
+↑ ∑ 𝐹𝑣
𝑇 = 𝑚𝑔 + 𝑚𝑎
𝑇 = 𝑚(𝑔 + 𝑎)

For box 2:
+↑ ∑ 𝐹𝑣
2𝑇 + 𝑅𝐸𝐹 = 𝑊
2𝑇 + 𝑚𝑎 = 𝑚𝑔

2𝑚(𝑔 + 𝑎) + 𝑚𝑎 = 𝑚𝑔
2𝑚𝑔 + 2𝑚𝑎 + 𝑚𝑎 = 𝑚𝑔
2𝑔 + 3𝑎 = 𝑔
3𝑎 = −𝑔
𝑚
𝑔 9.81 𝑠2
𝑎=− =

The negative sign indicates that m 2 is going upward.
𝑎 = 3.27 m/s 2
