Natural Gas Reserves – Feb 6, 2021 – S.M.

Farouq Ali

1. True or False: Oil/ Gas reserves may increase as the Oil/Gas price goes up

True

2. True or False: The price of natural gas and coal can be estimated based on the current
oil price only

False

3. The critical pressure of a gas is 644 psia, critical temperature is 340 R. Calculate the Bg
factor for a reservoir pressure of 3000 psia and temperature of 580 R.

pr = 3000/644 = 4.66 Tr = 1.70 From Papay’s equation

Z = 0.894 Bg = 14.7 ZT/520p = 0.004886 res ft3/scf.

Answer: 0.0049

4. The volume of gas in a reservoir is 500 BCF. What is the pore space occupied by gas?
Use the value of Bg calculated in Problem 3.

Res vol of gas = 500x109 x Bg = 2.45 BCF

5. Given the pore volume of gas in Problem 4, and a porosity of 29%, and a water
saturation of 30%, calculate the bulk volume of the reservoirs.
G = Vb (1-Swi)/Bg = Vb (0.29) (1-0.3) = 2.443 x109 Vb = 12.034x109 ft3

6. The reservoir in Problems 4 and 5 is produced to an abandonment pressure of 500 psia.

How much has is left in the reservoir?

Pore volume occupied by gas = 2.443 x109 ft3 Z at 500 psia = 0.9488 Bg= 0.03111 res ft3/scf
Gf=Gas in the res at 500 psia = (12.034e9) (0.29) (1-0.30)/0.03111 = 78.5 x109 ft3

7. What is the % recovery of gas in Problem 6?

Recovery = (G – Gf)/G = (500x109 – 78.524x109)/500x109 = 0.843

Answer: 84 %

8. Calculate the initial gas in place in a volumetric reservoir if after producing 2 BCF of gas
the reservoir pressure declines from the initial pressure of 2500 psia (Bgi =0.006872) to
2300 psia (Bg = 0.008553).
G(Bg-Bgi) = GpBg G=10.176 BCF

Answer: 10.18

9. If there is a 10% error in Bgi, what is the initial gas in place?

Correct Bgi = 0.9(0.006872)= 0.0061848
So, G is 7,223,207,499

Answer: 7.22 BCF

10. The following table is from the production data of a well

t, year Mscf/day
10.00 1600.00
13.00 1290.32
16.00 1081.08
19.00 930.23
22.00 816.33
25.00 727.27
28.00 655.74
Assuming exponential decline q=a*exp(-b*t) at what time the production will decline to 300
Mscf/day?

Chart Title

f(x) = 2454.15 exp( − 0.05 x )

500.00
5.00 10.00 15.00 20.00 25.00 30.00

Answer: 42.85 years
