Exercise 1

SPECIFIC GRAVITY
SPECIFIC GRAVITY

 ratio between the density of an object, and a

reference substance.
 “relative density”
 It can tell us if the object will sink or float in our
reference substance.
 Usually our reference substance is water *
 Symbol: sp.gr
 No units used*

FORMULA:
Tools used to measure specific gravity

 Pycnometer (with thermometer)

 Westphal Balance
 Hydrometer
Pycnometer

 It is used to measure the

density of liquids precisely
 It is used to calculate the
particle density of powder
 It is made of glass that has
a close fitting glass stopper
along with a capillary tube
Procedure
Wash, clean, and dry,
together with the cap

Weigh empty pycnometer

and record

+ distilled H2O (until mouth),

place glass stopper back

Weigh and record

*Repeat, except step 2, using sample for step 3

RESULTS/DATA
USING PYCNOMETER:
DATA LIQ. ETHYL CLOVE SYRUP GLYCERIN
PETROLATUM ALCOHOL OIL

Wt. of empty pycnometer 44.578 g 44.578 g 44.578 g 44.578 g 44.578 g

GRAVITY
Westphal Balance

 Aka Mohr’s Balance

 From around 1847

 used to measure the specific

gravity (or density) of liquids
Hydrometer

 an instrument that is used

to determine
specific gravity
 Specific Gravity Scale*

 Archimedes principle
• first account of the use of hydro meters in
England is in a paper published by Robert
Boyle in 1675
Procedure
+ sample liquid (100ml)

Place hydrometer slowly

Until it floats naturally

Record result
Types

1. Light Hydrometer
2. Heavy Hydrometer
