Q 4 W 5

Here are the steps to solve this problem: 1. Organize the data into a frequency table with colors as categories and tallies as frequencies. 2. Construct a line graph with colors on the x-axis and frequencies on the y-axis. 3. Label the axes, scales, and add a title. 4. Plot the points for each color category based on its frequency. 5. Connect the points to obtain the line graph. 6. Interpret the line graph to answer the questions: - Blue is the most favorite color with 10 learners - Pink is the least favorite with 6 learners - The total number of learners is 40 So in summary

OCTOBER DECEMBER APRIL MAY

Month

Mary’s family is planning to visit Valencia. They wanted to be there in its coldest
temperature. Mary made a research on the average monthly temperature during vacation
months: October (Semestral Break), December (Christmas Break), April and May (Summer
Break).
The line graph above shows the average monthly temperature at selected
months. If they decided based on the line graph, can you tell in which month will
Mary’s family go to Valencia?
The line graph as shown contains two related data, the month which can be seen in the
horizontal axis (or x- axis) and the corresponding temperature in a given month which is shown
in the vertical axis (or y-axis). If we analyze, on October, the temperature is at about 20°C, in
December it is 15°C, April 25°C and May is about 22°C.
Based on the line graph, the month when the temperature in Valencia is in its lowest is at 15°C
which is December. Therefore, Mary’s family should go to Valencia in December.

In our daily life, we deal with different information much of which is in the form of numerical
information called data.

Data is a set of values used in statistics.

Variables are characteristics or properties of people, objects, places or things in statistics that are
being presented in the data.

Statistics is a study of numerical data. It involves

The collection of data
The organization of the data into tables, charts, and graphs

In organizing data, a tabular form is used. Then, the data are can be presented in a graph like line
graph. Line Graph has a vertical line called the x-axis which contains the first variable in the
collected data. As we go through the y-axis, increasing values must be presented. Line graph
helps one see easily and clearly the changes in the data presented. A line graph has a title, one
kind of information in the x-axis and another kind of information on the y-axis.

Data can be collected in many ways and can be presented in different ways.
Example 1: Using a Single-Line Graph
Faith’s group surveyed 40 learners on their favorite color for their report. Here are the results.

red blue green yellow pink red blue

blue yellow blue yellow green red yellow
yellow yellow blue red green pink blue
yellow green pink red blue yellow
green red pink blue red yellow
blue green blue green red pink pink

Can you tell by looking at the data if how many answered they prefer such color?
Yes, but it is not easy to tell. Thus, there is a need to organize or group the data and this is done in a
table called a Frequency Table.

Steps in Presenting Data in a Line Graph

Draw the x and y-axis.
Use the data from the table to label the axes.
Plot the points that correspond to each variable in the table.
Connect the points with a line segment.
Put a title on the graph.
After organizing the data in a tabular form. This can be presented in a Line Grap

Interpreting a Line Graph

In a line graph, a line that goes up means an increase in value, while a line that goes down from its previous
point means a decrease in value.

Interpret the above line graph using the following questions:

What is the title of the graph?
Survey on the Learners’ Favorite Color
How many learners choose red as their favorite color? blue? green? yellow? pink?
Red - 8
Blue - 10
Green – 7
Yellow – 9
Pink - 6
What color is the most favorite?
 Blue
What color is the least favorite?
 Pink
How many learners participated in the survey?
 40
Line Graph has a vertical line called the x-axis which contains the first variable in the collected data.
As we go through the y-axis, increasing values must be presented. Line graph helps one see easily and
clearly the changes in the data presented. A line graph has a title, one kind of information in the x-axis
and another kind of information on the y-axis.
