Mary’s family is planning to visit Valencia. They wanted to be there in its coldest
temperature. Mary made a research on the average monthly temperature during vacation
months: October (Semestral Break), December (Christmas Break), April and May (Summer
Break).
The line graph above shows the average monthly temperature at selected
months. If they decided based on the line graph, can you tell in which month will
Mary’s family go to Valencia?
The line graph as shown contains two related data, the month which can be seen in the
horizontal axis (or x- axis) and the corresponding temperature in a given month which is shown
in the vertical axis (or y-axis). If we analyze, on October, the temperature is at about 20°C, in
December it is 15°C, April 25°C and May is about 22°C.
Based on the line graph, the month when the temperature in Valencia is in its lowest is at 15°C
which is December. Therefore, Mary’s family should go to Valencia in December.
In our daily life, we deal with different information much of which is in the form of numerical
information called data.
In organizing data, a tabular form is used. Then, the data are can be presented in a graph like line
graph. Line Graph has a vertical line called the x-axis which contains the first variable in the
collected data. As we go through the y-axis, increasing values must be presented. Line graph
helps one see easily and clearly the changes in the data presented. A line graph has a title, one
kind of information in the x-axis and another kind of information on the y-axis.
Data can be collected in many ways and can be presented in different ways.
Example 1: Using a Single-Line Graph
Faith’s group surveyed 40 learners on their favorite color for their report. Here are the results.
Can you tell by looking at the data if how many answered they prefer such color?
Yes, but it is not easy to tell. Thus, there is a need to organize or group the data and this is done in a
table called a Frequency Table.
In a line graph, a line that goes up means an increase in value, while a line that goes down from its previous
point means a decrease in value.
