Adam’s clasp
It is the major retentive component of the removable appliance & the
very important clasp because nearly all removable appliance have
Adams’ clasps as it aids in anchorage and allow the active component
to work properly.
It is constructed from 0.7mm H.S.S. wire with Adams’ pliers.
The bridge is used as a grasp for removal of the appliance.
The bridge can receive a lot of modifications & attachments.
1- Bridge:
1. Its height should be equal to ½ of the anatomical crown or
at the end of the buccal developmental groove.
1. Its width should be equal to the distance between mesiobuccal
& distobuccal cusp tips.
2. It should form 45° with the long axis of the tooth because:
a) The U-loop will be engaged into available undercuts area.
The best undercut area is located below the tip of the cusp tip.
a) It will be non-truamatic as:
above 45º is truamatic to the cheek & below 45º it will interfere
with the opposite teeth.
2- U-loop:
It should be situated at the available undercut area.
Its height is equal to the half height of the bridge.
It should form 45º with the bridge.
3- occlusal part: it contains 3 angles
Angle A: it determine the angle of the bridge.
Angle B: it is located at the occlusal contact between 2 adjacent
teeth on the buccal side.
Angle C: it is located at the occlusal contact between 2 adjacent
teeth on the lingual side.
4- retentive arms:
It is located at the lingual side ending 2mm away from the palate
midline and ended with small L-shape to provide enough amount
of the acrylic below the tag & preventing its dislodgement from
acrylic.
The mesial one can be straight while the distal one should be
curved mesially to decrease the palatal extension of acrylic and
minimizing discomfort to the patient.
Adjustment:
Adams 'clasp should be checked every visit for loosing & adjusted as
necessary so that the U-loops fully engage the undercut.
this is done by decreasing angles A,B or C.
Sometimes, it is done by approximate the U-loop toward each other
to increase their engagement to the undercut & increase retention,
because frequent adjustment by decreasing A,B,C angels may lead to
interference with insertion & removal of appliance.
Removable orthodontic appliance
Retentive components
Uses:
It is used in the upper incisor & rarely used for lower incisors
because it is constructed from 0.7 H.S.S. wire so it is considered to
be rigid for the lower incisors due to their small size.
Fitted Labial Arch (FLA)
1- Small U-loop:
a) It is 2 mm in width & its height engaged the embrasure area
between two adjacent teeth.
b) It should be away from the interdental papilla by at least 0.5mm to
prevent trauma to it.
2- Two horizontal arches:
It should be adapted to the labial surfaces of the incisors, at the level of
the junction between incisal & middle 1/3 of the incisors.
3- Two small vertical arms:
a) It should be extended from the horizontal arms & joining the
retentive arms.
b) They must be pass over the contact area between central & lateral
incisors to prevent interference with the opposing teeth.
4- Two retentive tags:
a) It should be adapted in between the two teeth palatally to prevent
the interference with opposing teeth.
b) It should be adapted the palate about 2mm away from palatal
midline.
c) It should be ended in a small L-shape (0.5mm) directed towards the
cast to allow space for the acrylic.
Adjustment:
This is done by slight squeezing of the U-loop with a slight bending
towards the labial surface of the incisor teeth to increase the
engagement in the undercut embrasure area.
It is done usually every orthodontic visit (2-3 weeks).
