This document provides information about braced excavations, including Peck's apparent pressure envelopes for cuts in various soil types and three example situations involving braced cuts. It defines relevant parameters such as thickness of soil layers, earth pressure coefficients, soil properties, and geometry of braced cuts. Example 1 involves determining strut reactions for a trench excavated in sand. Example 2 calculates maximum bending moment in a wale for a braced cut in clay. Example 3 involves sizing the wale section modulus for a stratified soil cut.

(BRACED EXCAVATIONS) Braced Excavations/ Cuts h1,h2 = thickness of sand and clay layers respectively 𝑘𝑠 = lateral earth pressure coefficient for sand layer ∅𝑠 = angle of friction of sand n = coefficient of progressive failure varies from 0.5 to 1.0 which depends upon the creep characteristics of clay. For clay n varies from 0.75 to 1.0. 𝑞𝑢 = unconfined compression strength of clay
Situation (1)- A long trench was excavated in medium dense sand
for the foundation of a multistory building. The sides of the trench are supported with sheet pile walls fixed in place by struts and Pecks (1969) Apparent Pressure Envelopes wales as shown in figure. The wales are braced at every 3 m center to center. Use the ff. data: Determine the reaction of the a.) Cuts in Sand strut at A, B and C
b.) Cuts in Saturated Clay (Soft to Medium Clay)
Situation (2)-A braced sheet pile to be used in an open cut in clay
is shown in the figure. Struts are spaced longitudinally at 2.0 m center to center spacing. Unit weight of clay is 18 kN/cu.m and an unconfined compressive strength of 120 kN/sq.m. Compute the maximum moment of the wale at B. c.) Cuts in Saturated Clay (Stiff Fissured Clay)
𝑐𝑢 = un-drained cohesion (∅′ = 0)
H = height or depth of excavation γ = unit weight of soil
Cuts in Stratified Soils
Situation (3)- Figure shows a braced cut in stratified soils. Given
γ sand = 16.5 kN/cu.m , c = 0 and Ф = 38⁰, γ Clay = 19 kN/cu.m , c = 36 kN/sq.m , n = 0.9. Compute the section modulus of wale at B if the allowable stress is 0.6 fy where fy = 250 MPa.
