    CELEBRATIONS, FESTIVALS AND TRADITIONS IN THE

    ENGLISH SPEAKING COUNTRIES

    FINAL ORAL PROJECT ENGLISH III: CELEBRATIONS AND FESTIVALS AROUND THE WORLD
    Purpose: To raise cultural and intercultural awareness by doing research online, reading, analysis and contrasting the Colombian
    culture with the one of other English speaking countries.

    Goal: To do an oral presentation in video individually or in small groups* based on a specific festival o celebration from an English
    speaking country, in which you describe it and talk about its characteristics as well as a comparison with the Colombian culture.

    ACTIVITIES

    Part 1: Let´s get into the context, How much do you know about the culture of other countries and of the USA?

    Assigned: April 26th. Due date: Until May 17th in Moodle. (INDIVIDUAL OR GROUP WORK). Include all of these in a
    word document, then save it as pdf and upload this with the student/student´s´names in Moodle.

    1. Answer the Intercultural Quiz provided in the following link. Copy the screenshots of your correct answers to
    this quiz:

    2. Watch the following video about the American culture. How much do you know? Answer and type your
    individual or group responses in the document to be uploaded:

    3. Research about a Festival or celebration of your preference for a specific English speaking country that you
    select. Examples of these are Valentine´s Day, Halloween, Christmas Day, Mother´s Day, etc. Find out
    information about its origins, characteristics, main events that happen in this celebration, main food(s) served
    during this celebration, etc. Include the summary of this research in your document.
    4. Compare the information that you researched with the Colombian way of celebrating this event. Present a
    parallel with at least 5 differences and 5 similarities.

    Part 2: Video presentations: (You need to do this in video format, with you presenting). You can do this in any video
    format that you want to use. Use visuals to support your presentation or editing tools if necessary. Use your creativity
    to present an interesting video to the rest of the class.

    Assigned: May 19th. Due date: June 2nd. (Video submission or delivery. I will give you more details on where to
    upload or share your videos later on)

    1. Prepare a report to the class through video. You need to present for a minimum of 5 minutes. If you choose to
    do a group video, you need to add more minutes according to the number of presenters. Use editing tools,
    effects and animations to provide an excellent presentation to the audience. Introduce yourself, explain the
    main information, talk about the differences with the Colombian way to celebrate this event and end your
    video with a short message about what you learned. BE CREATIVE!!!
    2. You will have the opportunity to value the video presentations of your classmates. The best 3 presentations
    according to the class will be exonerated of taking the final test!!! 

    Evaluation criteria:

    1. The presentation needs to be 5 minutes long approximately. If it is a group presentation, it needs to be longer
    as explained above. If you chose to do a group video, all students in the group need to speak a similar amount
    of time. (5 minutes each student approximately). You need to include a short introduction in the beginning of
    your presentation stating your name(s), the celebration selected and the country that you chose and
    compared to Colombia. Also you need to have a short closure at the end. Remember that you need to appear
    speaking in the video.
    2. Pronunciation needs to be excellent. Your English needs to be clear and fluent. You need to be speaking
    fluently, NOT READING ;)
    3. The content needs to be complete keeping in mind the parameters established in the research (Part 1).
    4. The activities uploaded in the google folder by May 17th will be taken into account for this final grade.

    *You can arrange to edit individual videos in one to make it a group video. Individual videos are an option too.
