Exercise 2
There has been an increase in the crime rate in your housing estate. As a concerned resident, you decide to write a
formal letter to the Chief of Police in your town to complain about the situation. Use the following notes to write
your formal letter.
Complaints:
 Snatch thieves attack pedestrians (C1)
 Break-ins at night (C2)
 Dim streetlights – dangerous (C3)
 Lack of police patrols (C4)
 Your own complaint (C5)
 Your own complaint (C6)
Suggestions to reduce the crime rate:
 Increase the number of police patrols (C7)
 Install better lighting (C8)
 Set up a neighbourhood watch (Rukun Tetangga) (C9)
 Residents take turn to patrol (C10)
 Housing estate committee – employ security guard (C11)
 Safety campaign – create awareness on personal safety (C12)
When writing the formal letter, you should remember to:

- Lay out the letter correctly (addresses, date, salutation, title, closing)
- Use all the notes given
- Give two other complaints of your own
