1. Introduction:
Definition, concept and scope of Zoology, emergence of Zoology as a subject
Branches of Zoology; relationship with other branches of science
History and the development of zoological studies in Bangladesh

2. Origin and emergence of life:


Primitive earth and the origin of life; major events in the history of life
Geological time scales and emergence of various animal groups,law of recapitulation
Concept of phylogeny, phylogenetic relationship and phylogenetic tree
Concept of evolution; fossils

3. Organization in animal body:


Body constituents, biological molecules, cell and organelles, tissue, organs and organ
systems

4. Basis of animal classification:


Cell division and Cell differentiation, germ layers, coelom, symmetry, segmentation,
tagmatization, body coverings, appendages, skeleton, etc.

5. Levels of organization in organisms:


Pre-cellular level – biomolecules; sub-cellular level – organelle; cellular level – cell; Multi-
cellular level – tissue; organ, organ system; organism

Classification of animals: Animal kingdom up to phyla on the basis of organization, symmetry,
coelom and phylogeny; different taxa and Linnean hierarchy and nomenclature
