What is Badminton?
Badminton is a court game that can be played either singles or doubles by men,
women, or mixed pairs, either indoors or on outdoor courts as a fun or highly
competitive level.
The game was originated from the ancient civilization of Europe and Asia known
as Battledore (bat or Paddle) and Shuttlecock more than 2000 years ago.
In the 1600s, Battledore and shuttlecock was an upper class pastime in England
and many European countries. The roots of the sport can be traced to ancient Greece,
China, and India, and it is closely related to the old children's game battledore and
shuttlecock.
Contemporary Badminton
The British and American expatriates introduced the game in the Philippines in
the 1920s. Mr. Adriano Torres was the first national Men's singles champion in the 1949
national rankings. And in 1950, the Philippines became the 21st country to join the
International Badminton Federation (IBF).
