Role Play - Jhansi Rani
I became a symbol of resistance to the British Raj for Indian nationalism. I had an
unusual upbringing for a Brahmin girl.
Growing up with boys in the Peshwa court, I was trained in martial arts and became
proficient in that.
I was married to the Maharaja of Jhansi, Gangadhar Rao and I changed my name
to Lakshmi Bai. I was widowed without bearing a surviving heir but I adopted a
baby, Damodar Rao.
Lord Dalhousie refused to recognize the adopted baby as the next heir for the
throne of Jhansi. Under the Doctrine of Lapse Policy, The British annexed Jhansi.
I was not willing to give up my fort and kingdom. As I studied self defence,
horsemenships, archery, sword fighting and I had even formed my own army out of
females in my kingdom.
I bravely fought against the British army with my son tied to my back and rode on
a horse.
My army consisted of famous figures like Tantia Tope and Nana sahib.
After gallantly fighting with the British troops, though I died physically, I will always
be remembered as one of the bravest warriors in Indian history.
Jai Hind.
