Trigonometry Timeline

Trigonometry originated from the Greeks in around 150 BC and was used for navigation and astronomy. It was first developed by Hipparchus, who created tables of ratios and defined sine, cosine, and other trigonometric functions. Ptolemy improved on Hipparchus' work by calculating square roots and developing sine and cosine rules. Throughout the medieval period, mathematicians in Egypt and other regions continued developing trigonometric formulas and calculating functions using tables. The modern field began to take shape in the 16th-17th centuries as Napier developed logarithmic functions and Pitiscus published the first text called "Trigonometry", establishing the name of the field.
