Flow Measurement (Sensors)

Here are the key steps to solve this problem: 1) The pressure at the outlet of the valve is equal to the hydrostatic pressure of the water column above it. Since the tank is filled to a height of 4 feet, the pressure at the outlet is ρgh = 62.4 lb/ft3 * 32.2 ft/s2 * 4 ft = 1000 lb/ft2. 2) Using Bernoulli's equation between a point just before the valve and a point just after, we can write: P1/γ + z1 + V1^2/2g = P2/γ + V2^2/2g 3) Since the pressure just before the valve is the

1. Water at 60°F is pumped through a pipe with a 1-in. inside diameter at a flow velocity of
2.0 ft/s. Find the volumetric flow and the mass flow. The density (ρ) of water is 62.4 lb/ft3 at
60°F.
Sol. Q= AV
A= pi*D2/4
Calculate Volumetric Flow as Q=Av
Mass Flow W= ρ*Q

2. Water at 80°F is pumped through a pipe with a 2-in. inside diameter at a flow velocity of
4.0 ft/s. Find the volumetric flow and the mass flow. The density (ρ) of water is 62.2 lb/ft3 at
80°F.
3. If the pipe changes from a diameter of 17 to 11 cm , and the velocity in the 17cm section is
5.4m/s, what is the average velocity in the 11cm section.
4. What is the flow rate in litre per sec through a pipe in 32cm in diameter, if the average
velocity is 2.1m/s?
5. What is the head loss in a 5cm diameter pipe that is 93m long? the friction factor is 0.03, and
the average velocity in the pipe is 1.03 m/s?
Ans hl= 3.02 m
in pascal Multiply with 9.8 kN/m3

If the height of a column of water h is 4.3m, what is the pressure at

P2? Assume the areas at points 2 and 3 are 29 cm2 and 17 cm2,
respectively?

In the fluid system , the flow velocity V at point 3 can be derived using point 2 as the reference line:

Point 3 at the exit has dynamic pressure, but no static pressure above 1 atm. Hence, P3=P1=1 atm,
and ϒ1= ϒ 3. This shows that the velocity of the liquid flowing out of the system is directly
proportional to the square root of the height of the liquid above the reference point.

A valve is opened on the bottom of a storage tank filled to a height of 4 feet with water. Find the discharge
velocity of the water just after the outlet valve is opened.
