Fly Fishing Proposal

Recreational Therapy

The RT department would like to begin a Fly-Fishing program here at CHYC. As RT

interns, we would like to establish a program that the department will be able implement
for many years to come. In order to develop this program, we would like to purchase 10-
12 high quality rods, reels and lines as well as fly fishing flies that will endure years of
use and provide many residents with new skills and lasting memories.

Purpose:
• To begin a fly-fishing program that would be therapeutic and beneficial for the
residents.
• Teach residents new skills and recreational activities that can be used after
discharge.
•   Provide opportunities for the residents to experience nature and learn the
importance of conservation of the land.
• This adventure therapy program will incorporate the Resilience and
Leisure/Well-Being Model.

Benefits of Fly Fishing:

Adventure therapy has been proven to be a great tool for individuals diagnosed
with mental illnesses. These individuals are able to heal and grow outside of the facility
as well as having the opportunity to be exposed to the therapeutic environment that the
outdoors has to offer. Adventure therapy encourages self-reflection, healthy
interpersonal skills, exercise and self-development. Fly fishing specifically shows great
benefits for mental health. These benefits include but are not limited to: improving short
term memory, restoring mental energy, enhancing concentration, low impact exercise,
decreasing stress, increasing mindfulness, increasing social engagement and building
conservation awareness. Fly fishing would give residents an opportunity to push
themselves as well as learn healthy coping skills that can be used in treatment.

Cost:
•   Fly Fishing gear combo (including rod, reel and line): $159 per outfit
•   Fly Box including an assortment of flies: $19.99 per box
•   1 Hour Fly Fishing Lesson per person: $60.00
•   Tip for Professional Fly-Fishing Instructor: $120

•  Cost of 10 Fly Fishing gear combo with CHYC exclusive discount offer: $1,300
•  Cost of 2 Fly Box: $39.98
•  Cost of Lessons for Approximately 10 Eligible Residents Birds/Arches outing- $600
•  Cost of Lessons for Approximately 10 Eligible Residents Gems outing- $600
•  Cost of Tip for Two 1 Hour lessons with Professional- $240

We understand that this is a large sum of money to begin the Fly-Fishing program, but
as stated above, it would be extremely beneficial for the residents of CHYC. Not only is
this program therapeutically beneficial, but it would also be a great way to market the
RT department at CHYC. After extensive research, we have found that, with proper use,
the fly fishing outfits (reel, rod, and lines) from Cabelas will last a minimum of 10 years.
The facility would benefit in investing in this program now because of the offer that we
were able to secure from Cabelas, they are willing to give us $300 off of our purchase. If
we are able to obtain this quality fly fishing gear, the RT department could utilize these
rods for many seasons. This program would be able to run spring-fall and give residents
exposure to many different local lakes, ponds and rivers. The price of professional fly-
fishing lessons will be a recurring cost but will vary depending on the size of the group.
We are confident the residents will be able to enjoy and grow from this life changing
experience. We have had great success with our other adventure therapy programs and
feel that this one will be no different.
