about an event or action

Certainly, Definitely, Probably,


undoubtedly, clearly, obviously etc.
What is the difference?
Scale of certainty
• Will certainly 100%
• Will definitely

• Possibly won’t

• Almost definitely won’t


• Certainly won’t 0%
With Regular verbs: Usually, adverbs of certainty
appear before the main verb

• Roger definitely attends the class every day


• Justin probably likes to sleep during his leisure time

With “Be” form verbs: Adverbs of certainty appear


after the “be” form verb

• She is certainly happy about the news


• Jacob is undoubtedly the best cricketer in our team
With Auxiliary verbs: adverbs of certainty is placed
between the auxiliary verb and the main verb

Will + Adverb for predictions
In positive sentences the adverb usually goes
between “will” and the verb

The adverb goes before won’t
