Reflection on meeting children’s individual needs

Doing observations: Before doing any form of activities with the children I did some
frequent observations to understand children better get a better idea of their personality,
their interests as well as their weaknesses. Though these observations I gathered a range of
different information that helped me understand their needs in more detail. For example, I
understood child H’s need for behavioural social and emotional development when I
observed that she was on a behaviour management system and had trouble managing her
behaviour with other practitioners as well as children. With child C I observed that he didn’t
interact fully with other children, he had trouble pronouncing words and would remain quite
most of the day through doing a time sampling observation, his need was for speech and
language as well as listening and attention.
Planning: Planning for activities to meet these children’s needs helped me understand the
importance of using the information gathered through observation, such as their strengths,
their weaknesses, who they are friends with and what their needs are, planning also helped
me think of the theorists’ ideologies that could be best utilized to use for planning in their
activity. It also helped me reflect on the area of development that will need to be focused on,
any resources that would need to be available, what the ideal environment will have to be for
the activity, any key members of staff who I will need assistance by and the way I will
manage the activity, for example if it will be adult led or child initiated.
Implementing activities: by implementing activities I provide children experiences which
they learn from and develop by that contributes towards meeting their specific needs. For
example, for child H I contributed towards meeting her needs for behavioural development
by implementing an activity that helps teach and highlight to her the importance of positive
behaviour and to help her understand how her actions can have a positive or negative effect
on the individuals around them, it helped also encourage her positive behaviour by
reinforcing to her and appreciating her when she correctly answered and identified positive
behaviour from the negative behaviour.
Reflecting: reflecting after implementing an activity helps meet individual children’s needs
with SEN is because then it gives me an opportunity to see what works best for the child in
comparison to what doesn’t, for example by trying different activities with the child I learnt
that for example child C isn’t particularly interested in role play however is more interested in
puzzles, which is why the interest for puzzles was utilized in his activity. Reflection also
helps us think about what the next steps would be for progression for the child, for example
understanding the child C enjoyed puzzles can then be used to expand his comfort zone and
use the idea of puzzles in a group activity, which will help promote his speech and language
development.
Working in partnership with key person: during observations and planning I worked in
partnership with child C’s key person, this is because she had the most knowledge related to
child C, I reflected back on his learner journal and saw what she had done previously, her
information such as the development stage child C is on, how his family situation is at home
the days he comes into the setting was all useful to help me identify and meet his needs for
communication and language.
Working in partnership with parents: working in partnership with parents providing them
forms that they completed and reflecting back on the information found helped me
understand how the environment for child C is like at home, what he does at home, who he
is close to in the family and how all this is affecting his speech and language, it also helped
me implement the child’s parents concerns and what I can do in the setting to help overcome
them for their child.
