Design a road pavement for a 2-lane road

with an average daily traffic ( 24 hour) :


Cars and Taxis = 320
Small lorries and vans ( 2 axles) = 5
Buses = 2
Motorcycles = 40
Total vehicles = 367

Development of Design Input

Traffic count data indicate a total of 347 vehicles in both directions


pavement design is then based on 174 vehicles ( one direction, 24 hour period).

Additional project related information:

Pcv = 10 % PCV with un-laden weight > 1.5 tons (PCV) and break down into
vehicle categories
Lane Distribution Factor, L = 1.0 ( one lane in one direction)
Terrain factor , T = 1.0 (Flat)
Design life = 10 years ( low volume)
Annual Traffic Growth = 2%

Determine Design Traffic ( Traffic Category)

LEF C = 0 Traffic composition (%), C= 87.1935


LEF CV1 = 0.10 CV1 = 1.36
LEF CV4 = 1.8 CV4 = 0.54
LEF MC = 0 MC = 10.90
CV % = 1.90

ESALY1 (Base Year) = ADT x 365 x VLF x L x T


= ( 367 x 0.87 x 0) + ( 367 x 0.01
x 0.10 ) + ( 367 x 0.01 x 1.8 )
+ ( 367 x 0.109 x 0 ) x 365
x 1.0 x 1.0
= 1497 ESAL

Design traffic over 10 years,

ESAL DES = ESALY1 x [(1 + r)n – 1]/r


= 1497 x [ ( 1+ 0.02 )^10 - 1 ) ]/ 0.02
= 0.0164 million ESAL for both direction
= 0.0082 million ESAL for one direction
