ABSTRACT

The descriptive research study titled “ THE USE OF THE WORDS ‘PO’ AND
‘OPO’ AMONG STUDENTS”,that will help assess whether students use these words in
conversation with other people especially the elders. The main purpose of the study is to
assess the students that uses the words ‘po’ and ‘opo’ in having conversations.This study
will help youths to remember the values that were taught to them by their parents and to
be aware on their actions.The study is limited to the assessment on the use of the words
‘po’ and ‘opo’ among youths. And the study focused on the 20 respondents of Regional
Science High School. The review of related literature of the study focuses on the different
culture of Filipinos which is also the topic of this research study. It utilized questionnaires
to collect data and information in order to answer questions about the current status of the
subject or topic of the study and uses formal samples to study preferences, attitudes,
concerns or interest of a sample.The respondents of the study were the high school
students from the Regional Science High School –IX. The students selected were from
Grade 10. There were only 20 students which were chosen at random to fully represent
the sample space intended for the study.The researcher developed a self-centered
questionnaire in order to collect the necessary data in order to answer the research
problems of this study. The questionnaire has been administered to the 20 respondents
through distribution of questionnaires with the course of one day, the data collected was
then computed to find the percentage of average scores. The data collected was then
interpreted using tables, the data gathered only means that youths or students uses ‘po’
and ‘opo’ more often than not using it at all. Based on the data gathered, it can be
concluded that students still values the words ‘po’ and ‘opo’ which is used by Filipinos to
pay respect to other people especially to elders. It is recommended that the next
researcher would focus on the other Filipino cultures in terms of paying respect, and go
deeper in formulating questions.
