C. WOULD PREFER & WOULD RATHER:


a. Use “PREFER”to say what you like more in general:

Prefer + to V
Prefer + V-ing
Eg. I don’t like cities. I prefer to live in the country. Or I prefer living in the country.

Prefer + Noun1/V-ing 1 + to + Noun2/V-ing 2


Eg. I prefer beer to wine.
I prefer watching TV to going to the cinema.

Prefer + to V1 + rather than + V2


Eg. I prefer to stay at home rather than go 1out.
+ rather than + V2

b. Use “WOULD PREFER” to say what somebody wants in a specific situation (not in general):

Would prefer + to V
Eg. - ‘Shall we go by train?’ -‘I’d prefer to drive’.

Would prefer + to V1 + rather than + V2


Eg. I’d prefer to stay at home tonight rather than go to the cinema.

c. WOULD RATHER
Would rather + V = Would prefer + to V

Eg. - ‘Shall we go by train?’ - ‘I’d prefer to drive.’ / ‘I’d rather drive.’


I’m tired. I’d rather not go out this evening, if you don’t mind.

Would rather + V1 + than V2

Eg. I’d rather stay at home tonight than go to the cinema.

When the subject of Eg.


“would rather” is also the I’d rather + V (present/future) I’d rather play tennis.
subject of the following I’d rather + have Vp2 (past) I’d rather not have gone out
verb yesterday.
When the subject of Eg.
“would rather” is different I’d rather sb + V-ed(present/future) I’d rather you stopped smoking.
from the subject of the I’d rather sb + had Vp2 (past) I’d rather you had mentioned
following verb that before.
Compare: I’d rather make dinner now. # I’d rather you made dinner now.
NOTE:
I’d rather you didn’t (do something) = I’d prefer you not do it.

I. Which do you prefer? Write sentences using ‘I prefer (something) to (something else): put
the verb into the correct form where necessary.
1. (drive / travel by train) I prefer driving to travelling by train.
