Assignment No: 2

1, The four arms of an A.C Bridge have the following elements- AB= a coil of unknown
impedance, BC a non-inductive resistor of 1000 ohms, CD a non-inductive resistor of 833
ohms in series with a standard capacitor of 0.38µF. AD is a non-reactive resistor of 16.8KΩ.
The supply frequency of 50 Hz is connected to points A and C and a detector across B and D.
Determine the inductance and resistance.

2, An AC bridge has in arm AB a pure capacitance of 0.2F, in arm BC, a pure resistance of
500, in arm CD a series combination of a 50 resistance and 0.1H inductance. Arm DA
consists of a capacitance of 0.4F in series with a resistance R2,  = 5000 rad/sec. A) Find
the value of R2 to give bridge balance. B) Can complete balance be obtained by adjustment
of R2? If not specify the position and the value of adjustable resistance to complete the
balance.

3. A Measuring device is placed in one of the arms of the Wheatstone’s bridge. All the arm of
the bridge along with the device are having a resistance of 200Ω. The maximum allowed
power dissipation from the sensor is 500mW. Determine the maximum permissible current
through the sensor and maximum allowable value of bridge voltage supply. Suppose a source
of 30V is available find the value of series resistance find the value of series resistance to be
connected between the source and bridge to limit the input voltage of the bridge to
permissible level

4, A sheet of Bakelite 4.5mm thick is tested at 50Hz between electrodes 0.12M diameter.
The Schering Bridge used employs a standard air capacitor C2 of 106pF, a non-reactive
resistance R4 of 1000/π ohms in parallel with a variable capacitor C4. Balance is obtained
when C4 = 0.5μF and R3 = 260Ω. Calculate the capacitance, power factor and relative
permittivity of the sheet.

5, The four arms of an AC bridge are given as follows. Arm AB= 2KΩ and 0.2µF in parallel,
BC = 1.5 KΩ, CD = 500Ω and 0.8H in series, DA = 2KΩ. The frequency of supply is 1kHz
and the voltage is 20V. The supply terminal are A and C. a) Is the bridge balanced, If not find
the new constants of arm CD for the bridge to be balanced. b) Find the voltage across the
high impedance detector for the original bridge constants.
