    The Libyan Iron and steel is considered one of the largest industrial companies in
    Libya , located on an area of 1,200 hectares near the town of Misrata , just 210
    kilometres to the east of the city of Tripoli . The design capacity of the company's
    1.324 million tons of liquid steel per annum adopting direct reduction of iron pellets
    using domestic natural gas.
    The foundation stone was laid for the company in 18/09/1979, marking the award of
    heavy manufacturing base in Libya. On 09/09/1989 the opening of production units
    and so, the company has entered the stage of production.
    In addition, the company has the following production units:
    1. Direct reduction plant (three units).
    2. Steel melt shops (1.2).
    3. Bar and rod mills (4 lines) .
    4. Light and medium section mill.
    5. Hot strip mill.
    6. Cold strip mill.
    7. Galvanizing line.
    8. Coating line.
    It also includes many of the ancillary units and facilities, including:
    a. Port and pellet stock yard.
    b. Power and water desalination plant.
    c. Oxygen and compressed air.
    d. Lime plant.
    e. Central Workshop.
    f. Training Centre.
    g. Quality control laboratories.

    The resort and beach club.


    As part of an interest to strive to respond to the customer's requests, the company
    adopted a system of international standards for quality. (ISO 9001/2000) and formed
    a council for quality assurance of the effectiveness of its application and in order to
    achieve desired goals. The Libyan Iron and Steel Company has acquired the twelfth
    Europe Award of quality in 1998.

    Training Centre:
    The training centre was Established
    for the qualification of personnel,
    consistent with the requirements of
    the jobs of various departments,
    consisting of a lecture hall for (600)
    person and (12) Workshops and (18)
    classes of various sizes.

    Medical clinics:
    Eight (8) medical clinics in addition
    to the x-ray unit and medical
    laboratory to provide services to
    workers and their families.

    DRI plant ( using the global method of Midrex )


    The plant comprises of three production
    units with production capacity of the two
    units I and II (1,100,000) tonnes per
    annum of sponge iron (DRI) and started
    the commercial operation of the two units
    on 3/28/1990.
    The third unit with a production capacity
    of (650,000 tons) per year of hot
    briquetted iron (HBI), The unit has entered the stage of commercial operation on
    13.11.1997. The total design production capacity of the direct reduction plant is
    (1,750,000) tons per year.

    Steel plants
    Steel Plant No.1: The plant entered stage
    of commercial operation on 10/16/1989
    with an annual designed production
    capacity of (670,000) tonnes of liquid
    steel to produce (630,000 tons) of billets
    and blooms. During the year 2008 was the
    completion of the expansion of the plant
    to reach annual designed capacity of about
    (1,000,000 tons), and the plant 0with a
    capacity of (90 tons).
    Steel Plant No. 2 : the plant entered the stage of commercial operation in 1991 with
    an annual design production capacity of ( 650,000 ) tonnes of liquid steel to produce
    ( 611.000 ) tons per year of slabs , using (3) electric arc furnaces each with a capacity
    of ( 90 tons)

    Bars and rod Mill


    the plant consists of two lines to Produce
    bars with designed capacity of ( 400,000 )
    tons of bars first line was
    commissioned on 12.10.1988 while the
    second line on 18/02/1989 also in 1997
    double strand line was implemented , with
    an annual designed capacity of ( 400,000
    tons) , it has started operation on
    27/05/1998

    Light and medium sections mill
    Entered the stage of commercial operation
    on 08/04/1989 with an annual designed
    production capacity of (120,000 tons) of
    light and medium sections in various sizes
    and dimensions.

    Hot strip Mill


    The annual designed capacity of the plant
    is (580,000 tons) of hot-rolled coils and
    entered commercial operation on
    05/10/1990.

    Cold strip mill


    started commercial operation on
    20/01/1990 with an annual design
    production capacity of (140,000 ) tons of
    cold rolled coils

    Galvanizing and paint coated lines


    The line is one of the expansion projects
    aimed at diversifying the company's
    products and improving quality
    with production capacity of (80,000
    tonnes) of galvanized coils per annum, and
    another painted coils line with an annual

    designed production capacity of (40,000 tons) has entered the stage of commercial
    operation on 02/09/1998.

    Lime and dolomite plant


    supplies the company's plants needs of
    limestone and dolomite with an annual
    production capacity of ( 88,000 tons) and
    the processing of these raw materials is
    as required sizes at the sedada quarry ,
    which is 140 km to the east of the city of
    Misrata.
    Steel Plant No. 2: the plant entered the stage of commercial operation in 1991 with an
    annual design production capacity of ( 650,000 ) tonnes of liquid steel to produce
